Laurel snaps slide, downs Miners 4-1 Newcomer Nellie Fox (HOF) made his Laurel debut and Barney McCosky (1941 DET) homered and drove in two to help the Highlanders top the Coal Miners 4-1 and end a six-game losing streak. Fox went 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly in his first game with the Highlanders, but made a difference with his glove at second base. McCosky hit his fourth home run of the year to lead off the game and also tripled. The Miners outhit the Highlanders 11-9 and left 10 men on base. Steve Sundra (1943 SLA) made his first start of the year for Laurel and pitched into the eighth inning, giving up eight hits and striking out four. Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) gave up a hit that scored one run but finished the eighth and Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) closed it out for his 20th save. Paul Foytack (1957 DET) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Foytack has appeared in 20 games, making seven starts this season. He is now 2-5 with losses in his last three appearances and five straight decisions. His last win was May 12. Gary Lavelle (1983 SFN), a name rumored to be on the trading block due to Appalachian having plenty of lefthanded relievers, threw 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief. Norm Larker (1960 LAD) and Bill Coughlin (1902 WAS) each had three hits for the Miners. Turkey Island at Delaware Valley
Minutemen imprison Turks 14-1 The Minutemen slaughtered the Susquehannocks 14-1. Bobby Shantz (1952 PHA) went the distance for the win, giving up a solo home run in the ninth inning to Danny Taylor (1934 BRO). Shantz (9-6) allowed five hits and struck out five. Delaware Valley rolled to the tune of 14 runs on 14 hits. They also received 13 walks with Roy Thomas (1903 PHN) drawing five free passes. Reggie Jackson (HOF) homered and Mike Piazza returned after a two-week injury and went 2 for 5 with three RBI. Bris Lord (1910 PHA) went 3 for 5 with three RBI. Pat Malone (1928 CUB) was charged with six runs, seven hits and eight walks in six innings. Malone (7-7) has lost three straight starts and four of his last five. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) allowed eight runs in two innings, seven of which scored in the eighth, on seven hits and five walks. Pittsburgh at Philadelphia
Pirates blast Phils 16-4 The Pittsburgh Pirates seem to be nigh unstoppable as they crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 16-4 for their 11th straight win, improving to 16-3 in June. The Phillies had five errors on the night and just kept giving the Pirates more runs and chances to hit. Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) nailed two home runs and Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) homered and had four RBI. Sauer is second in the league with 21 roundtrippers and tied for second in RBI at 63 with Reggie Jackson. Sauer is also on a 10-game hitting streak, raising his average from .257 to .294. He has five home runs and 19 RBI over that span. Sauer sports a .380 batting average in June with seven home runs and 24 RBI. Tom Filer (1988 MLA) beaned Thomas in the eighth and he had to leave the game. Thomas has hit seven home runs in the last seven games with 12 RBI. Six of the 16 runs were unearned. The Bucs finished with 15 hits. Jim Shaw (1918 WAS) made the start after the trade of Al Mamaux to Fort McIntosh. He went the distance allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out seven. Shaw (3-1, 3.15) has appeared in 15 games making two starts with one complete game and two saves. His 3.15 ERA is next to worst on the entire staff! Roy Campanella (HOF) blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for Philly. New Pirate Dick Allen debuted with a 2 for 5 day, two doubles and two RBI. The Phillies newest acquisition, Eric Milton (2002 MIN) was given the daunting task of stopping the Pirates. Milton gave up three unearned runs in the first and then three more runs in the third. He allowed three home runs and seven hits in three innings of work. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley
Brookens breaks down Industrialists Tom Brookens (1980 DET) belted a two-out homer in the bottom of the seventh and the Amish Men took a 3-2 win over LeHigh Valley. The Industrialists took a 2-0 lead on a home run by Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) in the top of the first inning and didn't score again. Kurowski's homer was his ninth and first long ball since hitting two on May 23. Chris Nabholz (1991 MON) moved to 7-3 after allowing two runs on nine hits in seven innings with six strikeouts. Gene Garber (1978 ATN) fanned three in two innings for his 11th save. Max Bishop (1928 PHA) went 3 for 4 for the Amish. Cumberland's two new outfielders, Pat Mullin (1941 DET) and Birdie Cree (1910 NYY) both started. Mullin was 1 for 4 and Cree went 1 for 3 with a run batted in. Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) took the loss, giving up three runs on nine hits in seven innings. LeHigh Valley left 11 men on base. Lake Erie at Allegheny
Hartman helps Tribe to 6-4 win Fred Hartman (1901 CHA) belted a three-run homer for a little breathing room and Allegheny topped Lake Erie 6-4. Both teams left 10 men on base. The Mudpuppies scored two in the eighth but went down meakly in the ninth. Bob Priddy (1968 CHA) worked six innings for the win, allowing two runs on six hits. Priddy (5-4) is 3-0 against Lake Erie. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) handled the ninth for his eighth save. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings. Harry Seibold (1930 BON) gave up the other three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Jack Dunn (1901 BAL) hit two triples for Lake Erie. The Tribe have won three in a row while the Mudpuppies have lost four straight. Elk County at Fort McIntosh
Souchock powers Militia to 14-1 win It was a huge day for Fort McIntosh, led by Steve Souchock's (1953 DET) two home runs and eight RBI the Militia demolished the Outdoorsmen 14-1. Souchock entered the game having played in just over half of the team's contests thus far and had two home runs and 12 RBI. Souchock smashed a pair of two-run dingers and plated two more as he went 3 for 4. The offense started for Fort McIntosh with a six-run first against Rube Waddell (HOF). From there they scored five runs in five innings off Jim Duffalo (1964 SFN) and hit three home runs in one inning off Ed Klepfer (1917 CLE). Jack Clark (1987 SLN) and Hack Wilson (HOF) went back to back off Klepfer and Baldy Louden (1914 BUF FL) added another long ball off Klepfer. The Fort's big acquisition in the trade of Dick Allen to Pittsburgh was Al Mamaux (1915 PIT). He took the mound for the Militia and went the distance, allowing one run in the first inning and gave up six hits, five walks and struck out five. Mamaux (11-3) dropped his ERA to 2.06. Paul Schaal (1971 KCA), also acquired in the trade with Pittsburgh, went 0 for 5 in his debut for the Militia. Steve Souchock sabr.org/bioproj/person/484f0403

Hickman blasts lifts Highlanders to 4-2 win A three-run eighth was capped by a two-run homer from Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE) and the Highlanders pulled out a 4-2 win over Appalachian. Laurel's new second baseman Nellie Fox finished 0 for 3, still looking for his first hit after two games, but sacrificed Barney McCosky (1941 DET) into scoring position and Stan Musial (HOF) drove him in with a single. Hickman hit a two-out blast off Ed Walsh (HOF) to take the lead. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) took care of the ninth for his league-leading 21st save. Bob Malloy (1941 CIN) made his first appearance of the season, getting one out in the eighth and received the win. Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) went 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits for the Highlanders. McCosky went 4 for 4. Walsh (10-9) took the tough loss, allowing four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) was 3 for 4 and is hitting .317 for the year. Norm Larker (1960 LAD) drove in both runs for the Miners. Turkey Island at Delaware Valley
Home runs bring Minutemen back for 6-3 win Mickey Vernon (1953 WAS) and Mike Piazza (HER) each hit two-run homers in the seventh inning and Delaware Valley rallied for a 6-3 win over Turkey Island. The long ball cost Christy Mathewson (HOF) his 10th win. Jamie Moyer (2002 SEA) worked seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Piazza had four RBI and Vernon went 3 for 5. Pittsburgh at Philadelphia
Bucs rally late to keep streak alive The Pittsburgh Pirates trailed from the first inning on but came to life with a run in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth to deal a 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies and extend the winning streak to 12 games. Dick Allen (HER) belted a two-run homer, his first as a Pirate, in the eighth. In the ninth, Buddy Bell (HER) tied the game with a base hit and Allen drove home the go-ahead run. Bobby Del Greco (1952 PIT) added another run off Philly closer Mike Koplove (2002 ARI). Koplove (2-4) blew his fifth save opportunity of the year. The Bucs outhit the Phils 12-5. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) struggled in allowing five runs -- three earned -- on only five hits and five walks, over six innings. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) threw two hitless innings for the win and Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) wrapped it up for his 15th save. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) threw well in the no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings. He walked five and struck out six. Bobby Higginson (1996 DET) homered and had four RBI for the Phillies. Philly has lost four in a row. Pittsburgh is 6-1 against the Phillies this season. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley
Winter descends on LeHigh Valley George Winter (1906 BOA) gave up a run in the first inning and that was it as the Amish Men went on to take a 5-1 decision over LeHigh Valley. Winter (8-4) was unhittable after the opening frame. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two. Winter has won three straight games and tossed complete games in the last two, giving up only one run in 18 innings. This was his fourth complete game. Les Bell (1926 SLN) hit just his third home run of the year in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) added a solo shot in the seventh. Randy Gumpert (1949 CHA) fell to 5-10 after allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Gumpert is 0-8 since May 11, a span of nine starts and has lost four straight. The Amish left 12 men on base. The Industrialists have lost four in a row. Lake Erie at Allegheny
Erie handles Tribe 6-3 George Alusik (1964 KCA) had two doubles and three RBI to help Lake Erie take a 6-3 win over Allegheny. Both teams found ways to get some runs on the board with each sporting pretty sparse hitting lineups. The Mudpuppies outhit the Tribel 11-9. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) won for just the second time this season. Harper (2-6) gave up three runs on nine hits and had six walks and three strikeouts. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and finished for his 12th save. Matt Clement (2002 CUB) was charged with six runs on 10 hits in six innings as his ERA jumped to 3.30. Elk County at Fort McIntosh
Militia charge through Elks Fort McIntosh scored four runs late to blow open the lead and finish off the Outdoorsmen 7-2. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) had a shutout in the ninth inning before finally tiring and loading the bases with one out. Rowan (7-5) was charged with two runs on eight hits in 8 1/3 innings. Rowan was trying to finish what would have been just the third shutout of the season for the Militia. Rowan has won three straight games and seven of his last eight starts, bringing his ERA down to 4.62. Rube Bressler (1914 PHA) gave up three runs on seven hits and five walks in six innings. He falls to 4-2 with a 2.43 ERA for the year. Jack Clark (1987 SLN) hit a solo home run for the Fort while Hank Allen (1969 WAS) and Tony Rensa (1930 PHN) each had two RBI. Fort McIntosh has won a season-high five games in a row.

Miners knock down Highlanders in 12 Danny Litwhiler's (1941 PHN) only hit of the game drove in the game-winning run in the 12th to put the Coal Miners over the Highlanders 5-4. Ron Northey (1944 PHN) and Adam Comorosky (1930 PIT) hit back to back home runs off Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) in the top of the eighth to tie the game 4-4. Comorosky doubled in the 12th off Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) and Litwhiler singled him home. Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) went 3 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed one hit, a double to Stan Musial (HOF), in the bottom of the 12th, but Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) struck out for the fourth time to end the game. Against the Highlanders this season, Grzenda has allowed one run and three hits in 9 2/3 innings with two walks and 12 strikeouts. The Highlanders are batting .088 against the lefty closer. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) had three RBI for the Highlanders. Comorosky finished 4 for 5. Turkey Island at Delaware Valley
Minutemen beat Turks late Three straight two-out hits in the last of the eighth gave the Minutemen a 5-4 win over Turkey Island. Light-hitting Billy Gilbert (1901 MLA) capped the two-out offense with the game-winning hit. He is batting a mere .208 for the season. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) got the start and went eight innings for the win, allowing four runs on seven hits. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) got his 18th save. Rip Collins (1934 SLN) homered for the Susquehannocks and Clyde Barnhart (1925 PIT) was 3 for 4 with three RBI. Mike Piazza (HER) drilled his 14th home run of the season for Delaware Valley and had three RBI. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) took the loss after 2 2/3 innings of relief. Delaware Valley has won four straight while Turkey Island has lost four in a row. Pittsburgh at Philadelphia
Home runs carry Bucs to 13th straight win Honus Wagner (HOF), Dick Allen (HER) and Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) each went deep as the Pirates trailed midway through but roared back to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6. The Bucs have won 13 games in a row. Pittsburgh smashed Philly pitching for 21 hits but left 14 men on base. Allen was 4 for 5 with three RBI. Wagner, Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB), Moose Solters (1934 BOA) and Bobby Lowe (1901 BON) each had three hits. Eight different Pirates scored a run. Lew Moren (1909 PHN) made the start and worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out seven. Russ Kemmerer (1960 CHA) filled the roster spot left open with the trade of Al Mamaux and couldn't quite finish things out for the save. He was charged with one run on three hits and four walks in two innings. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) got the final out with the bases loaded for his 16th save. Bill Dietrich (1943 CHA) allowed five runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings for the loss. Dietrich (5-5) gave up two home runs, doubling his total for season to four in 87 innings. Reliever Jack Meyer (1959 PHN) was tagged for his first home run allowed in 43 innings. The Phillies have dropped five in a row. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley
Amish rally for 6-5 win Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) doubled two runs home to tie the game and Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit a two-run homer to take the lead and the Amish Men edged LeHigh Valley 6-5. Wade Miller (2002 HOU) faced one batter too many in the bottom of the seventh. Then Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) gave up the homer that cost him the game. Miller (2-9) was charged with five runs on seven hits, he walked three and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Jim Todd (1975 OAK) got the win with two innings of one-hit relief. Gene Garber (1978 ATL) gave up a run-scoring double to Ramon Martinez (2002 SFN) in the ninth but got his 12th save. Tom Matchick (1969 DET) came into the game with four RBI on the year and left with a total of seven. Matchick went 2 for 4 to put his average at .174. The Amish sweep the three-game series while the Industrialists have lost five in a row. Cumberland Valley is a remarkable 17-7 in one-run games. Lake Erie at Allegheny
Erie strikes down Tribe 3-1 Lake Erie found enough offense to pull out a 3-1 win at Allegheny. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) homered to tie the game 1-1 and move his hitting streak to 17 games. In the eighth, Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) tripled to take the lead and scored on a single by Alan Strange (1934 SLA). Dave Wickersham worked eight solid innings, allowing one run on four hits. Wickersham (7-9) snapped a personal five-game losing streak. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) got his 13th save. Lake Erie outhit Allegheny 10-4 and left 10 men on base. Shawkey shuts out Fort Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) pitched a two-hitter and Elk County topped Fort McIntosh 2-0. Shawkey (8-6) issued six walks and struck out two. Late HRs take LeHigh over Laurel Chuck Kress (1949 CHA) and Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) hit solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively and LeHigh Valley battled back to steal one from the Laurel Highlanders 5-4. The Industrialists fought hard the whole game in leading early and staying close. "Crooning" Joe Cascarella (1934 PHA) threw a great game in only his second start of the year. He gave up four runs -- two earned -- on eight hits with four walks over seven innings. Rich Delucia (1995 SLN) worked two perfect innings for his 15th save. Bob Moose (1968 PIT) was hit with the loss, allowing five runs on 12 hits in seven innings. Moose (4-7) has lost three straight games and only has one win since April 28. Whitey Kurowski sabr.org/bioproj/person/2c2e4e20Allegheny at Elk County
Elks take slim 3-2 win over Tribe One error ended up allowing one run to score and Allegheny lost to Elk County 3-2. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) dropped a flyball and Jimmy Slagle (1902 CUB) hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Rube Waddell (HOF) worked hard for eight innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits and striking out seven. Dave Freisleben (1977 SDN) surrendered one unearned run and one hit over 3 1/3 innings but took the loss in his best outing of the season. His ERA lowered to 6.75. Robinson extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Pittsburgh at Lake EriePirates take down Mudpuppies 9-6 There doesn't seem to be anything that can stop the Pittsburgh Pirates as three players drove in two runs in a 9-6 win over Lake Erie that extended the winning streak to 14 games. Honus Wagner (HOF), Eddie Sauer (1949 BON) and Tony Bartirome (1952 PIT) each had two RBI for the Bucs. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) will fill in quite nicely for the departed Al Mamaux in the rotation. Purkey (4-1) didn't give up an earned run in 7 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits. Russ Kemmerer (1960 CHA) walked two in the ninth and gave up a run but managed to nail down his first save. The Bucs scored eight runs on seven hits in the second inning. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) didn't have it, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings and drops to 3-11 on the year. Tom Tellmann (1983 MLA) pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits. Pittsburgh turned four double plays and the Mudpuppies did not leave a single man on base. Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) had two hits and two RBI for Lake Erie. Delaware Valley at Philadelphia
Big inning gives Minutemen 8-5 win Delaware Valley scored all of its runs in the top of the seventh to come from behind and pound the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5. The Philly bullpen let this one get away, giving up a 5-0 lead. Mark Gubicza (1988 KCA) left the game with a shutout but ended up charged with three runs and a no-decision. Tom Filer (1988 MLA) gave up four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings for the loss. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) was knocked around for four runs on 10 hits in five innings but he got off the hook. Herb Pennock (HOF) got his first win with three innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) got his 19th save. The Phillies outhit the Minutemen 14-10. Jeff Leonard (1984 SFN) went 4 for 5 and Roy Campanella (HOF) hit his 13th home run. Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) was 4 for 4 with two RBI for the Minutemen. Delaware Valley has won five in a row. The Phillies have lost six straight. Appalachian at Cumberland Valley
Coveleski confounds Cumberland Harry Coveleski (1916 DET) went the distance and Appalachian picked up a nice 4-1 win over the Amish Men. Coveleski (9-5) allowed one run on five hits in pitching his fifth complete game. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) went 3 for 4 with two RBI and is hitting a league-leading .380 for the Miners. Eddie Plank (HOF) fell to 3-8 overall after allowing four runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and striking out five in seven innings. Plank is 2-1 in his last six starts. Fort McIntosh at Turkey Island
Turks fend off Militia 9-7 Turkey Island scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Militia battled back with six runs the last three innings but came up short 9-7. Danny Taylor (1934 BRO), Tom Jones (1909 SLA) and Joe Martin (1903 SLA) each had two RBI for the Susquehannocks. Pete Vuckovich (1978 SLN) went 7 1/3 innings for the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Stan Belinda (1993 PIT) had to get the final out for his 13th save. Paul Minner (1952 CUB) gave up seven runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings and falls to 1-9 on the year. Jack Clark (1987 SLN), Hack Wilson (HOF) and Tom McCreery (1901 BRO) each drove in two runs for the Militia.

Allegheny at Elk County
Tribe rallies for 4-2 win Allegheny trailed the whole game but scored four runs the last two innings to trip up the Outdoorsmen 4-2. A three-run eighth did in the Elks. Cal Abrams (1954 BAL) led off with a home run against Mike Mussina (HER). Dion James (1987 ATN) made a great grab in leftfield but with two out Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) dropped a flyball. Dick Groat (1960 PIT) singled the final run home. Harry Gumbert (1943 SLN) pitched eight innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) saved his ninth game for the Indians. It was a costly win though as Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) left the game with an injury for Allegheny. Mussina (5-6) only allowed one earned run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings for the loss. He also struck out nine. Pittsburgh at Lake ErieDoak takes Bucs to 15th straight win Bill Doak (1914 SLN) went the distance and the Pirates put away Lake Erie 4-1 for their 15th straight win. Doak (13-2) allowed a run in the second inning. He finished up his seventh complete game with five hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Bobby Wallace (HOF) had two RBI and Honus Wagner (HOF) had three hits and three stolen bases. Glenn Becker (1971 CUB) went 3 for 5 as the top three hitters for the Bucs had eight of the team's 10 hits. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for the loss. Peters (9-8) has lost four straight games and is 0-3 against the Pirates. Delaware Valley at Philadelphia
Shantz, Jackson difference makers in 5-1 win Reggie Jackson (HOF) blasted a three-run homer and Bobby Shantz (1952 PHA) pitched a complete game as Delaware Valley downed the Phillies 5-1. Jackson went deep off Eric Milton (2002 MIN) in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie, just after they had intentionally walked Mike Piazza. It was Mr. October's 19th home run of the season. Shantz (10-6) gave up just six hits in his eighth complete game and putting his ERA at 2.88. Milton (1-2) struck out 11 in 7 1/3 innings, his second start with the Phillies since the trade. Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) hit a solo shot off him in the third. Delaware Valley has won six straight while Philly had dropped seven in a row. Appalachian at Cumberland Valley
Larker blast gives Miners 9-8 win Norm Larker (1960 LAD) belted his fifth home run of the year in the top of the ninth off Gene Garber (1978 ATN) and the Coal Miners took a 9-8 win over the Amish Men. This was a great back and forth contest with the lead changing hands six times. Both bullpens pitched much better than the two starters in this one. Gary Lavelle (1983 SFN) got one out in the eighth and received his first win of the season. Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) notched save #15. Garber fell to 4-5 on the year. Hugh Jennings went 3 for 4 with two stolen bases for the Miners. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) went 4 for 4 and is now batting .319 for the year. Bill Coughlin (1902 WAS) was 3 for 4 with two RBI and John Titus (1909 PHN) homered and had two RBI. Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) drove in three runs for the Amish. Max Bishop (1928 PHA) and Les Bell (1926 SLN) each had three hits. Fort McIntosh at Turkey Island
Mamaux pays off again The acquisition of Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) paid off with a second straight win as a two-hitter helped the Militia knock off the Susquehannocks 5-0. Mamaux (12-3) rolled through the Susquehannocks lineup, walking four and striking out two. Mamaux has won four straight games and has five complete games and three shutouts this season. Over the last four games he has allowed two earned runs in 32 2/3 innings, bringing his ERA down to 1.91. Mickey Morandini (1995 PHN) had three hits and Jack Clark (1987 SLN) had two RBI for the Militia. Pat Malone (1928 CUB) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Grand slam sends LeHigh over Laurel 10-7 A two-out walk-off grand slam by Ben Davis (2002 SEA) gave the Industrialists a thrilling 10-7 win over the Highlanders. LeHigh trailed 5-0 but worked its way back to tie the game 5-5 after six innings, and take the lead in the seventh. Stan Musial (HOF) crushed his 19th home run of the year in the top of the ninth off Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) to put Laurel ahead 7-6. It was the first dinger allowed by DeLucia in 35 innings this season. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) put himself in too much jeopardy in the last of the ninth. Davis cranked his fifth homer, a grand slam to win the game. Davis finished with six RBI. Ken Griffey Sr. went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and three RBI for the Highlanders. Allegheny at Elk County
Daly dinger helps Tribe win 5-2 Tom Daly (1901 BRO) hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Allegheny went on to top the Outdoorsmen 5-2. Matt Clement (2002 CUB) worked into the seventh for his ninth win, striking out 10 and allowing two runs on seven hits. It was his sixth double-digit strikeout performance and he leads the league with 132. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) pitched three perfect innings for his seventh save. Ed Klepfer (1917 CLE) gave up four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings for his first loss of the year. Sparky Lyle (HER) and Jim Duffalo (1964 SFN) finished the game and allowed only one hit. Pittsburgh at Lake ErieBucs make it 16 straight Another great game on the mound from Frank Smith (1909 CHA) helped the Pirates beat the Mudpuppies 3-2 for their 16th win in a row. Smith (9-8) went eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and he struck out a season-high nine batters. Smith is 3-0 against Erie this year, allowing three earned runs in 25 innings. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) gave up two hits in the ninth but got a double play to end the game for his 17th save. Buddy Bell (HER), Moose (1934 BOA) and Bobby Lowe (1901 BON) each drove in a run for the Bucs. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) took the complete game loss, allowing only one earned run on six hits. Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) went 3 for 4 and drove in both runs for Erie. The Pirates have now forged a 10-game lead over the Highlanders in the West, when the month started the two teams fought to either share the top spot or manage to lead by 1/2 or one game. Lake Erie lost the first four games of the current winning streak for the Pirates. Delaware Valley at Philadelphia
Caldwell near-perfect vs. Philly Ray Caldwell (1914 NYY) came close to perfection but took a one-hitter instead as Delaware Valley crushed Philadelphia 14-0. Caldwell (9-6) was perfect until the eighth inning when Bobby Higginson (1996 DET) drilled a double. Caldwell ended with a one-hitter, one walk and five strikeouts. This was his sixth complete game and first shutout. Mike Piazza (HER) hit his 15th home run and had four RBI for the Minutemen. Reggie Jackson (HOF) went deep for the 20th time this season. Mickey Vernon (1953 WAS), Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) and Buck Weaver (1918 CHA) all had three hits. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 12 hits in six innings. Buster Narum (1964 WAS) was left in the game to finish and gave up five runs on eight hits in three innings. The Minutemen won for the seventh straight time while the Phillies lost their eighth in a row. Appalachian at Cumberland Valley
Miners dig deep for 5-3 win Back to back jacks by Adam Comorosky (1930 PIT) and Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) gave the Coal Miners a 5-3 win over the Amish Men. Comorosky's seventh long-ball of the season off Ken Raffensberger (1951 CIN) broke a 3-3 tie. Litwhiler then homered off Jim Todd (1975 OAK) for a 5-3 lead. Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) worked the ninth for his 16th save. Ed Walsh (HOF) got the win, allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings. Walsh (11-9) snapped a three-game losing streak. Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) drove in all three runs for the Amish. Raffensberger (10-3) had won his last four decisions. Appalachian has won four in a row and remain 5 1/2 games behind the East-leading Minutemen. Fort McIntosh at Turkey Island
Susquehannocks infiltrate Fort 4-2 Elmer Knetzer (1914 PIT FL) worked into the eighth and Turkey Island grabbed a 4-2 win over Fort McIntosh. Knetzer (3-7) allowed one earned run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) picked up his first save of the year. Mike Mowrey (1910 SLN) drove in two runs after Rip Collins (1934 SLN) had been intentionally walked in a three-run first for Turkey Island. League office OKs minor trade
The Philadelphia Phillies have made another deal involving an outfielder. The Phils have sent Pat Kelly (1969 KCA) to Turkey Island for left-hander Joe Shaute (1928 CLE).
Shaute worked out of the Susquehannocks' bullpen until early in June when he was sent down to the minors. Shaute saw time on the mound in 15 games, 29 2/3 innings, and allowed 24 runs on 51 hits. He is 2-1 with a 6.67 ERA. The Phillies figure they'll give him a shot in their own beleaguered bullpen and they also only have 10 pitchers on the roster before adding Shaute. He will give them a second southpaw to use in relief.
Outfielder Pat Kelly has only played in six games for the Phillies. He is hitting .375, 6 for 16, with six runs scored and five stolen bases.

Indians pick up Musselman from DV
Teams continue to try and find ways to make even small improvements. Allegheny County shipped backup third baseman Charlie Deal (1915 SL FL) to Delaware Valley for starting pitcher Jeff Musselman (1988 TOR).
The Indians are fighting to reach .500 playing in the tough Western division. Musselman has not played this season for the East-leading Minutemen and will move right into the starting rotation for the Tribe. This gives Allegheny a lefthander to start and lets them send Dave Freisleben (1977 SDN) down to the minors.
Delaware Valley needed someone to give Buck Weaver a little rest at third base. Deal has played 19 games for the Indians, hitting .200 with three doubles and three RBI.

Minutemen execute another deal
Delaware Valley worked out another small deal as it tries to maintain first place in the East. The Minutemen send catcher Jack Lapp (1915 PHA) to Elk County in exchange for shortstop Billy Hunter (1954 BAL).
Hunter is projected to become the everyday shortstop for the Minutemen. He saw playing time in only three games for the Outdoorsmen, going 1 for 9 at the plate (.111).
Lapp appeared in four games for Delaware Valley, batting .308 with a home run and two RBI. Elk County will give him playing time behind the plate as well as some work at first base.

Nellie Fox (HOF) and Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) hit home runs early in the game for the Highlanders. Don Shaw (1971 SLN) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Militia, but George Susce (1957 BOA) gave up seven runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks in the ninth. Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, giving up six hits for the win. Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) got out of trouble in the eighth and handled the ninth for his fourth save. Doc Medich (1975 NYY) fell to 5-11 on the year with 5 1/3 innings of work and allowing three runs on nine hits. Allegheny at Lake Erie
Tribe manage 3-2 win There wasn't much in the way of offense but the Indians managed to score enough to beat Lake Erie 3-2. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) went eight innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) picked up his 14th save. Jeff Musselman (1988 TOR) made his first start of the year after being acquired from Delaware Valley. He gave up three runs on six hits in six innings. A two-run double by Bones Ely (1902 WAS), who entered after an injury to Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) proved to be the difference in the game. Philadelphia at Cumberland Valley
Bell bangs two homers, Amish beat Phils 9-8 Les Bell (1926 SLN) hit two home runs and had four RBI to give Cumberland Valley a 9-8 win over Philadelphia. Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit his 15th home run and drove in three for the Amish. Cumberland Valley sent five pitchers to the mound to somehow come away with a win. Erie and Cumberland do business
Lake Erie and Cumberland Valley agreed to terms on a one-player deal. The Amish Men send first baseman/infielder Russ Wrightstone (1927 PHN) to the Mudpuppies for shortstop Terry Turner (1906 CLE).
Turner has played in 64 of the 77 games for the Mudpuppies and is batting .256 with four doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI. Filling the void at short for Erie will be Bones Ely (1902 WAS) and Alan Strange (1934 SLA).
The Amish will use Wrightstone in a number of positions. He can spell Joe Collins at first base and will likely play at second, third and designated hitter as needed. Wrightstone played in 23 games for Cumberland, batting .267 with one double and seven RBI.

East bottom-dwellers make trade
The two teams fighting each other to stay out of last place in the East have consumated a trade. The Philadelphia Phillies give second baseman Pat Kelly (1993 NYY) and outfielder Dick Harley (1902 DET) to LeHigh Valley for second baseman Eddie Stanky (1949 BON).
Stanky has been one of the few bright spots this season for the Industrialists. In 64 of the 77 team games Stanky is hitting .256 with seven doubles, two triples, a home run and 21 RBI. He brings a .373 on base percentage to the Phillies and has made only three errors at second base. Stanky also leads LeHigh Valley in runs scored with 41.
The Phillies gave up a pair of players that have been in the minors for them. Kelly had played in only one game and went 0 for 3. Harley saw some time in 17 games early in the season, batting .182.
Philadelphia will put Stanky into the lineup at second base and move Jimmy Dykes to third. The defense will be improved and the current plan is to platoon Brook Jacoby and Harry Davis at first base.
LeHigh Valley is happy to insert Kelly at second where the defense is expected to remain about the same and he'll bring some added speed to the lineup. Harley gives them a much needed outfielder and he will likely see a lot of playing time and may even take over in centerfield.
