The Minutemen are 5-0 against the Indians. Fort McIntosh at Pittsburgh
Purkey disbands Militia Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) was nearly unhittable Friday night as he finished a one-hitter and the Pirates beat the Militia 3-0. Purkey (8-2) beat former Buco Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) in for the latter's first game against his former team. Both teams were really up for this one and the intensity was there from start to finish. Purkey was perfect into the sixth until walking Jack Clark (1987 SLN). Hack Wilson (HOF) broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single to right in the seventh. Purkey (8-2, 2.77) finished with seven strikeouts. Purkey has won four consecutive decisions and eight of his last nine. He is 5-1 since moving into the rotation full time after the trade of Mamaux. This was the eighth one-hitter thrown in the Keystone State League. The Pirates scored a run in the third after a walk, passed ball and base hit. They loaded the bases with no out in the seventh and knocked Mamaux (16-5, 1.94) off the mound, then scored two more runs. Mamaux had won four straight games and is 6-2, 1.60 since joining the Militia. Turkey Island at LeHigh Valley

Walsh (13-11, 3.86) threw a complete game in taking the loss and struck out a season-high 13. Walsh gave up eight hits and four walks. The Militia are happy to see their team ERA finally below five at 4.95, tied for last in the league with LeHigh Valley. Pittsburgh at Elk CountyBucs win 3-2 in 12 It was anti-climatic to what had been a great game but the Pirates' winning run scored on a wild pitch in a 3-2 decision over Elk County. John Ward (HOF) had entered the game as a pinch-runner then singled to drive in two runs and put Elk County on top 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, spoiling a great outing by Bill Doak (1914 SLN). Doug Brocail (1998 DET) then blew the save in the ninth after a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double by Moose Solters (1934 BOA). Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the top of the 12th after two errors and a walk. Brocail's wild pitch sent the go-ahead run home and Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) closed it out for his 26th save. Jim Shaw (1918 WAS) went 3 2/3 innings for the win. Doak was joined by Rube Waddell (HOF) as the starters who each thought they had a win but went home with nothing.
