Islanders edge Minutemen 2-1
Pat Malone came out on top in a great pitching matchup against Jon Matlack as a single in the bottom of the ninth by Rip Collins won the game for Turkey Island 2-1 over Delaware Valley.
Malone (9-13, 4.43) went the distance, allowing only five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Matlack (16-5, 2.96) didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning. He ended up taking the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Buck Weaver singled to bring home Hugh High in the top of the second inning for the Minutemen. Mike Difelice tied the game for the Susquehannocks with a base hit to drive in Clyde Barnhart.
Harry Lumley led off the last of the ninth with a single and stole second base. Collins singled to left and Lumley scored ahead of the throw by Bris Lord.

Rube Bressler (7-6, 3.44) had the right stuff last night as he gave up just three hits and the Outdoorsmen gunned down the Indians 9-0.
It was the fifth complete game and third shutout so far for Bressler.
The .206 hitting Luke Boone belted a grand slam, his fourth home run of the year, in the bottom of the second to get the Outdoorsmen an early lead. Art Howe also hit his fourth homer of the season and had three RBI. Dion James and Fielder Jones each had three hits for Elk County.
Bob Priddy (7-8, 4.21) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings.

The Highlanders scored five runs in two innings off the league's best pitcher and made that stand up for a 5-2 win over Fort McIntosh.
Terry Mulholland (12-5, 3.87) went 8 1/3 innings for the win, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out eight. Ed Roebuck got his 28th save by getting Tito Francona to hit into a double play.
Al Mamaux (18-6, 2.02) allowed a three-run homer to Bob Bailor in the second, and a two-run single to Ken Griffey Sr. in the third. Mamaux allowed six hits with seven walks.

Carl Furillo ended a great pitcher's contest in the bottom of the 11th with his 14th home run of the season to give the Industrialists a 2-1 win over the Coal Miners.
Furillo went 4 for 5 with two doubles.
Curt Simmons for LeHigh and Ed Walsh for Appalachian matched up for nine innings, each giving up one run. Walsh allowed six hits, no walks and struck out 11. Simmons gave up seven hits, one walk and fanned six.
Rich DeLucia picked up the win with two innings of work.
Joe Grzenda took the loss. It was only the second home run given up this year by Grzenda in 51 innings. The first one came on opening day April 7 against the Phillies. Grzenda is 5-3 with two of the losses coming against LeHigh Valley.
LeHigh Valley is is now 9-6 against the Miners this year. For the season they are last in the East at 45-66, but are 18-18 in one run games and 6-1 in extra innings.

Despite plenty of chances, the Amish Men didn't score until the bottom of the seventh when Les Bell hit a three-run homer that fueled a 4-2 win over the Mudpuppies.
Dave Wickersham (11-12, 3.49) had a 10-hit shutout going until Bell homered to put Cumberland Valley ahead 3-2. Wickersham had not lost since July 9.
Butch Wynegar hit a pinch-hit home run in the eighth off Joe Page.
Chris Nabholz (8-5, 4.33) worked 7 1/3 innings for the win, his first since June 20. Gene Garber wrapped it up for his 21st save.

Two sacrifice flies was all the Phillies got against Bill Doak but it was enough to beat the Pirates 2-1.
Mark Gubicza (13-10, 4.07) threw a complete game, allowing one run on nine hits. Frank Thomas connected for his 11th home run of the season to tie the game 1-1 for Pittsburgh in the sixth. Thomas was 4 for 4 on the night.
Bobby Higginson hit a sac fly in the third and Wid Conroy did the same in the top of the ninth.
Doak (16-7, 2.31) allowed eight hits in nine innings. He is now 0-4 in his last five starts. Doak threw a one-hit shutout against the Phillies on May 16.
