Laurel at Elk County
Highlanders edge Elks 4-3 A good, close game all the way saw Birdie Cree (1910 NYY) come off the bench and drive in the eventual game-winning run in a 4-3 final for the Highlanders. Smith shuts out Erie 4-0 Frank Smith (1909 CHA) worked a tidy four-hit shutout, Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) homered, and Pittsburgh blanked Lake Erie 4-0. Smith (7-8) sports a nifty 2.49 ERA for the year. He walked three and struck out five in throwing his second shutout of the season and sixth complete game. Sauer connected for a solo shot, his 17th, and went 3 for 4. Sauer is tied for second in the league in home runs with Danny Litwhiler, Reggie Jackson and Stan Musial. Bill Carrick (1901 WAS) threw well for the Mudpuppies, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Bucs sweep the four-game series with Erie. Allegheny at Fort McIntosh
Fort fends off Tribe attack 8-7 Fort McIntosh led 8-2 after seven innings but barely held on to beat the Indians 8-7. Dick Allen (HER) belted a three-run homer to pad the Militia's lead. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) cranked a three-run shot for the Tribe in the ninth but Matt Karchner (1995 CHA) got the final out for his sixth save. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) went 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits for the win. Rowan (5-5) has won five of his last six starts. Rick Krivda (1995 BAL) was called back up to make the start and lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Appalachian at Cumberland Valley
Miners upend Amish 6-2 Cumberland Valley led 2-1 in the eighth inning but closer Gene Garber (1978 ATN) couldn't shut the door and the Coal Miners won 6-2. Garber gave up four hits and four runs in the top of the eighth for his fifth blown save of the year and his record is now 4-4. Bill Sherdel (1928 SLN) was in line for just his second win of the season after going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Hal Woodeschick (1964 HOU) was the winner with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Delaware Valley at Turkey Island
Vernon homer helps Minutemen win 4-3 Mickey Vernon (1953 WAS) belted a three-run homer and good pitching led to the Minutemen beating Turkey Island 4-3. Lew Krausse (1968 OAK) is now 7-1 on the year after allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. Krausse has won seven straight decisions. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) worked the ninth for his 17th save. Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings and drops to 1-5 for the season. Turkey Island left 12 men on base. Laurel at Elk County
Laurel power leads to 2-1 win Home runs by Stan Musial (HOF) and Ed Abbaticchio (1903 BON) was all the offense the Highlanders needed in a big 2-1 win over Elk County. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) and Mike Mussina (HER) for the Highlanders and Outdoorsmen respectively matched up in an excellent pitcher's dual. Mulholland (10-1) allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Mussina (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. The Outdoorsmen loaded the bases with one out against Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) but failed to get home the tying run in the eighth. Roebuck completed the game for his 19th save. The teams split the four-game series and the Highlanders remain one game back in the West behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. LeHigh Valley at Philadelphia
Bullpens blow it, LeHigh wins 4-3 Both bullpens gave up the lead late in the game but it was Doug Clemens' (1964 CUB) two-run double off Mike Koplove (2002 ARI) in the top of the ninth that gave the Industrialists a 4-3 win over Philadelphia. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) allowed a two-run single in the seventh to John Knight (1910 NYY) that put the Phillies ahead 3-2. O'Toole ended up with the win and is now 5-0 as Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) finished for his 14th save. Roy Campanella (HOF) hit his 10th home run for the Phillies. "Gunboat" guns down Mudpuppies Harry "Gunboat" Gumbert (1943 SLN) gave up just four hits and Jim Russell (1944 PIT) drove in five runs as Allegheny shutout Lake Erie 10-0. Gumbert (3-6) was helped out by two runners thrown out at home plate to keep the shutout intact. Gumbert walked two and fanned one and his ERA is now 3.95 after tossing his second shutout of the year. Russell hit his fourth home run, a three-run shot, and finished 3 for 3 with five RBI. Wally Kimmick (1925 PHN) was called up in some roster moves, started at second base, and went 3 for 3 with a triple, four runs scored and one run batted in. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) didn't have it this time out, being charged with six runs -- four earned -- on six hits in two innings of work for Erie. The Mudpuppies have lost seven in a row and Fort McIntosh has them in sight as the Militia try to climb out of the West division basement. Appalachian at Fort McIntosh
Miners stymie Militia 1-0 A great pitcher's dual was decided on a base hit by Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) in the eighth inning and the Coal Miners edged the Militia 1-0. Harry Dorish (1954 CHA) and John Burkett (1993 SFN) for the Miners and Militia respectively matched zeroes until the eighth. Dorish (4-0) went 8 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits. Joe Grzenda entered and got a double play to end the game for his 13th save. Burkett (5-8) allowed one run on 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) went 3 for 5 for Appalachian and leads the league with a .403 batting average. Philadelphia at Delaware Valley
Phils outlast Minutemen 7-5 Philadelphia slugged its way to an early lead and held on the rest of the way for a 7-5 win over East-division leading Delaware Valley. Mark Gubicza (1988 KCA) picked up the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Mike Koplove (2002 ARI) came on in the eighth but couldn't get through the ninth. Jack Meyer (1959 PHN) got the final out for his third save. John Smiley (1991 PIT) was called up to make his first start of the season for the Minutemen. The Phillies loaded up nine right hand batters and knocked the lefty around for seven runs on 12 hits in three innings of work. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) threw six innings of three-hit relief for Delaware Valley. Wid Conroy (1903 NYY) went 4 for 4 for Philadelphia. Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) hit his third home run of the year. The Phillies outhit the Minutemen 15-12. All nine Philly starters had a hit. Laurel at Cumberland Valley
Amish overcome Highlanders 5-4 As he did Sept. 17, 1968, to send the Detroit Tigers to the World Series, Don Wert singled to drive in the game-winning run for Cumberland Valley over the vaunted Laurel Highlanders. It was a great game that saw the Amish send Elmer Myers (1916 PHA) out to the mound for the first time this season, while Mel Queen (1944 NYY) made only his second start for the Highlanders. Cumberland's bullpen has not been getting the job done of late and this time it was Bruce Sutter (HER) once again unable to hold a lead. The Amish led 4-1 but the Highlanders scored three runs in the top of the eighth. Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) doubled in the bottom of the frame and Wert singled to score pinch-runner Tom Herr (1985 SLN) with the go-ahead run. Sutter was able to put the Highlanders away in order in the ninth for the win. Myers was charged with two runs on six hits, three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. Queen allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) took the loss. Don Wert: sabr.org/bioproj/person/5dd914c9Pittsburgh at Turkey Island
McDowell zaps Turks 7-0 Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) threw a six-hit shutout and Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) hit two home runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates put away the Susquehannocks 7-0. McDowell (9-3) walked three and struck out 10 in throwing his fourth shutout of the year. McDowell brought his ERA down to 2.12. The lefty has won four straight starts and given up four runs in his last 32 innings. Surprisingly, this was his first 10 strikeout performance of the season. He is second in the league in strikeouts behind Matt Clement (109 - 99). Thomas hit his first two home runs of the year on April 28. He had not gone deep since then until hitting two more today. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 5 as Pittsburgh finished with 12 hits. Christy Mathewson (HOF) took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) gave up four runs on four hits the last two innings. The Bucs have won five in a row and lead the West by two games. LeHigh Valley at Elk County
Milton blanks LeHigh in debut Eric Milton (2002 MIN) got the call up and made his first start of the year for the Outdoorsmen against LeHigh Valley. He faced the minimum and had allowed no hits for six innings before Carl Furillo (1953 BRO) broke it up. Herbie Moran drove in the only run of the night in the seventh and Elk County won 1-0. Milton faced Furillo in the ninth with two out and a man on first and got the ground ball to complete the shutout. He allowed three hits, two walks and struck out one in an impressive debut. Wade Miller (2002 HOU) took the tough loss. He went eight innings and gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and falls to 2-8 on the year.

Terry Turner (1906 CLE) homered and was 3 for 5 for the Mudpuppies. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) falls to 3-9 for the season, allowing six runs -- three earned -- on four hits in five innings of work. Purkey (2-1) allowed only four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the rare start. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 6 with two RBI and Glenn Beckert was 3 for 6. This was certainly a crazy looking game with not a lot of hitting, a bunch of errors and walks, that added up to a real barn burner. The Industrialists scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Tribe chipped away and led 4-3 in the ninth inning. A two-out triple by Al Spangler (1964 HOU) tied the game. Both teams saw some great relief pitching to send the game into the night. Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) threw four innings and Curly Ogden (1925 WAS) went three and got the win for the Industrialists. The two relievers combined to allow three hits and one walk in seven innings. For the Tribe it was Brian Holton (1988 LAD) giving up the tying run in the ninth. He went five innings, allowing one run on three hits. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) pitched four innings and gave up the one run on three hits to take the loss. Wagner tripled in the seventh and Beckert brought him home with a base hit for an insurance run. Pittsburgh put two men on in the eighth with two out but Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) left them there. Miljus allowed a single to Hickman in the ninth but that was it.

Laurel tied the game in the second on a leadoff triple by Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE) and a ground out by Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN). The Pirates took the lead in the second on Sadowski's home run. Hallman doubled two runs home in the fourth. The Bucs added an unearned run off Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) in the seventh on a base hit by Bobby Wallace (HOF). Laurel left eight men on base for the game. They had runners on the corners in the eighth but a pair of strikeouts got McDowell out of the jam. Griffey Sr. singled and a walk to Ken Macha (1980 MON) brought Moren into the game and pinch-hitter Barney McCosky (1941 DET) hit into a fielder's choice to end the game. The Highlanders have dropped five in a row and are now six games behind the Pirates in the West. Appalachian at Philadelphia
Miners nail Phillies 5-3 Philadelphia outhit Appalachian 13-9 but it was the Coal Miners taking home a 5-3 victory. Dick Tracewski (1964 LAD) had a big two-run single for the Miners. Philadelphia left 10 men on base and the Miners turned three double plays. Laurel at Pittsburgh

Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) plated two runs with a base hit in the sixth and the Pirates won 5-4. Bill Doak (1914 SLN) picked up his league-leading 12th win of the year. Doak (12-2) was tagged for four runs on six hits in six innings and his ERA rose to 1.55. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) pitched two scorless innings and Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) notched his 14th save. The first trade activity in the Keystone State League has taken place, as reported by the commissioner's office. The two top teams battling it out in the West have both taken steps to try and improve their overall results on the field.
Pittsburgh sends
pitcher Al Mamaux (10-3, 2.15) third baseman Pete Schaal (14g / .152 / 0 / 2)
to Fort McIntosh for
first baseman Dick Allen (.229 / 16 / 47)
A trade between first-place Pittsburgh and last-place Fort McIntosh in the West. The Militia are no longer the league's worst hitting team as they've put three teams behind them in that category with an overall batting average of .258. The Fort is batting .300 in the month of June. Only the Laurel Highlanders have hit more home runs (74) then the Militia (72). They traded away their leading home run hitter in Dick Allen with 16 and he is tied for the team high in RBI with 47.
The loss of Dick Allen will have an effect on the Militia's lineup, but their problem all year has been a severe lack of pitching. They not only have the worst record in the league at 25-46 but by far the worst team ERA at 5.43. They are 0.78 behind the next worst staff in LeHigh Valley (4.65). The addition of the Pirates' #4 starter Al Mamaux immediately places him as the staff ace. Mamaux is 10-3 and fourth in the league in ERA at 2.15.
The Fort will also move third baseman Paul Schaal into the starting lineup. The Militia now plan to move Pete Suder from third and have him platoon at second base with Mickey Morandini.
From the Pittsburgh perspective, the trade fills a need at first base which was one of only two poor spots in the batting order, the other being catcher. Allen will take over the first base duties from Scoops Carey (.205 / 0 / 5) and Tony Bartirome (.173 / 0 / 7). The Bucs are right in the middle of the pack with 45 home runs on the year and hitting .272 as a team.
The Pirates have by far the best pitching staff in the league and so could afford to give up a top flight pitcher. Bob Purkey (2-1, 2.75) is scheduled to move into the rotation and the Bucs will bring up Russ Kemmerer to fill the spot in the bullpen.
Laurel sends
outfielder Pat Mullin (25g / .293 / 0 / 3) outfielder Birdie Cree (21g / .170 / 0 / 6)
to Cumberland Valley for
second baseman Nellie Fox (.243 / 0 / 17)
The Highlanders are mired in a six-game losing streak at the same time the Pirates have won 10 in a row. Similar to the Pittsburgh the Highlanders have a potent lineup with little holes. One position they wanted to upgrade was second base. They did that by acquiring Hall of Famer Nellie Fox. He quickly takes over at second base for Ed Abbatichio (.196 / 3 / 20).
Laurel let go starting platoon designated hitter in Pat Mullin. Not only will the defense improve with Fox at second base but the Highlanders are going to move Ed Miller in at shortstop against left-handed starters and let Bob Bailor be the DH, also greatly improving the defense at shortstop.
The Amish Men enjoyed great depth at second base with Max Bishop usually starting in the field and Fox and Tom Herr splitting time as the designated hitter. Herr will take over as the regular DH while Mullin will now platoon in centerfield with Cliff Heathcote. The Amish also added another outfielder in Birdie Cree as they needed more depth at that position.
Philadelphia sends
outfielder Dion James (9g / .200 / 0 / 3)
to Elk County for
pitcher Eric Milton (1-0, 0.00)
The Outdoorsmen are the only team chasing the Pirates and Highlanders that looks like has any chance at all of catching them. The Elks were looking for outfield help and picked up Dion James from the Phillies. James is expected to start in leftfield against righthanders. James was on the opening day roster and the starting lineup but was soon benched and then sent down to the minors.
Philadelphia is in the bottom three of the league in team pitching. Lefty Eric Milton will go right into the rotation and it is hoped he will be a big boost. Milton was recentlly called up by Elk County and threw a three-hit shutout in his only start of the season.
