He has won three straight starts and lowered his ERA to 2.44. Jimmy Slagle (1902 CUB) drove in two runs and stole three bases. Red Murray (1910 NYG) had two doubles and two RBI. The Minutemen added four runs in the top of the ninth to create some good breathing room. Jamie Moyer (2002 SEA) pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and striking out eight. It's the second complete game for Moyer and the 17th for the Minutemen, tied with Pittsburgh for the most in the Keystone League. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) dropped to 0-6 on the year. Hostetler delivers game-winning hit for Laurel [/FONT][/center] Chuck Hostetler (1944 DET) had entered the game as a pinch hitter in the designated hitter spot, then made the most of his chance to bat by singling in two runs in the bottom of the ninth as Laurel demoralized the Amish 5-4. In the top of the eighth, Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) hit a two-out, two-run triple to give Cumberland Valley the lead. Gene Garber (1978 ATL) was unable to gather the save. Two hits and a hit batsmen loaded the bases. Hostetler singled with one out and two runs scored to win the game. Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) also blew the save for the Highlanders but was the winner. Walsh sinks Bucs [/FONT][/center] Ed Walsh (HOF) worked an impressive two-hit shutout and the Coal Miners took down the Pirates 4-0. Walsh (8-6) brought his ERA down to 4.02. He walked just one and fanned five. Walsh has won four straight starts and allowed only one run in the last 18 innings. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) went 3 for 4 with two RBI and his seventh home run of the season. Daubert's 19-game hitting streak ended yesterday when he was called upon to pinch hit in the ninth inning. Walters tops Matty in pitching showdown [/FONT][/center] Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) came out victorious against Christy Mathewson (HOF) in a 1-0 win for the Phillies over Turkey Island. Walters (4-8) finished a four-hit shutout that brought his ERA down to 5.94. Mathewson didn't give up a run until the top of the ninth when Del Ennis (1949 PHN) singled up the middle to score Bobby Higginson (1996 DET). Stan Belinda (1993 PIT) got the final out with the bases loaded. Walters walked two in the bottom of the ninth before ending the game. Militia out-fights Highlanders [/FONT][/center] In an intense, hard-fought, back and forth game, the Fort McIntosh Militia battled to the end and pulled out an 8-7 win over the West division-leading Highlanders 8-7. The Militia held a 6-1 lead but Laurel piled up five runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game. The Highlanders went in front 7-6 in the sixth, but the Militia ground out two runs in the ninth for the win. Hack Wilson (HOF) opened the rally with a double, having already homered and tripled in the game. Tito Francona (1959 CLE) then smashed a two-run homer off Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) to give Fort McIntosh an 8-7 lead. The southpaw has won seven consecutive starts and pitched complete games in four of the last five. Matlack has not lost since April 21. Eddie Plank (HOF) and Jamie Moyer (2002 SEA) each went nine innings for the Amish and Minutemen respectively. Wagner (1-6) took a shutout into the ninth inning before it was broken up. He allowed five hits and five walks and his ERA now stands at 3.80. On the season Wagner is receiving a mere 2.60 runs per start. In his last outing, the only one that wasn't a start, he threw four innings of shutout relief for the save. The Industrialists scored five runs in the sixth to go in front 6-0. The bottom five hitters in the order combined for eight of the team's 10 hits and drove in all the runs. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) got his seventh save. The win came at the expense of Keystone State league leader in wins and ERA -- Bill Doak (1914 SLN). Dorish (3-0) made his first start of the season, a last minute change instead of Stan Coveleski (HOF). Dorish gave up five hits and one walk with three strikeouts and has his ERA at 2.75 for the year. Dorish has not allowed an earned run in his last 24 2/3 innings. John Hummel (1909 BRO) hit his first home run of the year and went 3 for 4 for the Miners. Jamie Moyer (2002 SEA) took the loss, allowing two runs on nine hits in seven innings. Griffey homered to go in front 5-4, but Tom Brookens (1980 DET) belted his sixth of the year off Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 score. Locke went three innings for his third save of the year. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) gave up four runs, seven hits, and three homers in six innings and is now 9-1 for the season. Fort hammers LeHigh 13-1 [/FONT][/center] Emmett Hedrick (1901 SLN) led offensive barrage with four RBI as Fort McIntosh unloaded the cannons on LeHigh Valley for a 13-1 win. Ed Ott (1979 PIT) and Pete Suder (1949 PHA) hit home runs for the Militia and each drove in three runs. Ott's first home run of the year came on opening day. Doc Medich (1975 NYY) picked up a complete game victory allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out seven for Fort McIntosh. Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) gave up six runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings for the loss. Heffner (3-3) has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 11 1/3 innings. Moose drops on Phils [/FONT][/center] Julius "Moose" Solters (1934 BOA) did all the damage for the Pirates, driving in three runs to hand Philadelphia a 3-1 loss. Solters went 3 for 4 with a double. Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) also went 3 for 4. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) did his usual thing on the mound going eight innings and allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) gave up a solo home run to Brook Jacoby in the ninth but got his 11th save. That was the first home run allowed this year in 22 innings by Miljus. Bill Dietrich (1943 CHA) was the loser, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings for the Phillies. Jeff Leonard (1984 SFN) also went deep for Philly. Walsh one-hits Mudpuppies [/FONT][/center] Ed Walsh (HOF) hurled a one-hit shutout and Charley Gelbert (1930 SLN) had four RBI as the Coal Miners clubbed the Mudpuppies 12-0. Walsh (10-6) gave up a base hit to Joe Collins (1952 NYY) early in the game. Walsh walked two and struck out three in lowering his ERA to 3.61. Walsh is really on a roll, winning six consecutive starts and nine of his last 10. He follows Pittsburgh's Bill Doak as the next to reach 10 wins on the season. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) drove in three runs and Adam Comorosky (1930 PIT) hit his fourth home run of the year for the Miners. Hugh Jennings (HOF) added three hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) was hit for six runs on 10 safeties in five innings for the loss. topple Minutemen 6-5 in 10 [/FONT][/center] Herbie Moran (1914 CIN) plated Jimmy Slagle (1902 CUB) with a base hit in the bottom of the 10th to give Elk County a big 6-5 come from behind win. The Outdoorsmen trailed 5-0 after six innings. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) couldn't shut the door in the ninth and lost it in the 10th for Delaware Valley. Ed Klepfer (1917 CLE) was great for the Elks, throwing five innings of three-hit relief to pick up the win. Art Howe (1978 HOU) started the last of the 10th with a base hit then pinch-runner Slagle stole second. Moran singled after an out had been recorded to win the game. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) got the start and a no-decision for the Minutemen, allowing four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Musial, Griffey homers help Laurel win 6-3 [/FONT][/center] Stan Musial (HOF) and Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) each went deep to help the Highlanders hold off the Amish Men 6-3. Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) added three hits and two RBI for the Highlanders. The Amish made it a 4-3 game in the seventh but Griffey homered off reliever Tom Buskey (1979 TOR) for the breathing room. Bruce Dal Canton (1972 KCA) got the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) finished the game for his third save. Stanky drives LeHigh to 12-2 win [/FONT][/center] Eddie Stanky (1949 BON) collected four RBI as the Industrialists blew out the Militia 12-2. Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) hit a three-run triple with Charlie Kress (1949 CHA) and Joe Boley (1930 PHA) adding three RBI apiece for LeHigh. Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) went all the way to run his record to 8-4. He allowed solo home runs to Tony Rensa (1930 PHN) and Pete Suder (1949 PHA). LeHigh outhit the Fort 17-6. Phils sink Pirates 15-5 [/FONT][/center] Philadelphia exploded for 11 runs in the second inning to blow the Pirates out of the water 15-5. Brook Jacoby (1987 CLE) hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give him four RBI for the day along with three hits. Dion James (1987 ATN) was called up before the game and went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Al Spohrer (1930 BON) got a start behind the plate and went 3 for 3. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) allowed homers to Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) and Moose Solters (1934 BOA) but went the distance and is now 5-9 for the year with a 5.86 ERA. Stan Coveleski (HOF) entered after Paul Hartzell (1977 CAL) gave up a home run that tied the game to Carl Sawatski (1961 SLN).
