Tribe stun Highlanders with comeback Lance Parrish (HER) homered to tie the game and Bill McKechnie (1914 IND FL) plated the game-winning run in walk-off fashion and the Indians knocked out the Highlanders 7-6. Allegheny scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to win it. After Parrish's seventh home run of the year, a two-out jack, tied the game, Joe Harris (1925 WAS) was hit with a pitch. Klondike Douglass (1902 PHN) ripped a single and then McKenchine won it with another base hit off Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN). It was the eighth blown save for the league-leader Roebuck. Gary Ross (1969 SDN) was great in relief, throwing five two-hit, scoreless innings to get the win. The five shutout innings lowered Ross' (3-2) ERA to 4.88. The Indians outhit Laurel 17-14 and both teams left 12 men on base. Parrish finished 3 for 5 with three RBI. Jim Russell (1944 PIT) also went 3 for 5 and McKechnie and Tom Daly (1901 BRO) both had two RBI. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) had three hits for Laurel with Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Doc Gessler (1909 BOA) both adding two RBI. Allegheny overcame three errors that made three of Laurel's runs unearned. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley

Tribe trip Highlanders 7-6 In a great back and forth contest the Indians came away with a 7-6 win over the Laurel Highlanders. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) almost let it slip away in the ninth. With runners on the corners and two out Dick Groat (1960 PIT) made a great play in the hole at short to throw out Barney McCosky (1941 DET) and end the game. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) went 2 1/3 innings of three-hit relief for the win. Leskanic got his 10th save. All nine Indians had a hit in this one with six different players driving in a run. Lance Parrish (HER) hit his eighth home run of the year for the Tribe. Amish take 5-1 win with big ninth A 1-1 ballgame was broken open by four runs in the top of the ninth and Cumberland Valley put away the Susquehannocks 5-1. Lefty Joe Klink (1990 OAK) did not do his job in relief of Pat Malone (1928 CUB). Two left-hand hitters drove in runs with singles off Klink. Les Bell (1926 SLN) doubled two more runs in off Stan Belinda (1993 PIT). George Winter (1906 BOA) worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on 10 hits and three walks. Bruce Sutter (HER) finished the game with a perfect 2 2/3 innings for the win. Malone (7-10) was charged with three runs on seven hits. Malone has lost six consecutive starts and his ERA has gone up a full run in that time to 4.48. Turkey Island left 10 men on base and the Amish stranded nine. Delaware Valley at Lake Erie
Minutemen secure win in ninth After eight innings and back and forth scoring the Minutemen added one more run in the ninth to edge the Mudpuppies 9-8. Buck Weaver (1918 CHA) went 5 for 5 for the Minutemen. The winning run in the ninth came after a triple by Steve Yerkes (1915 PIT FL), in his first at-bat of the game, and a single by Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL). Carl Sawatski (1961 SLN) hit two home runs and had four RBI for Lake Erie. Sherry Magee (1910 PHN) and Lynn Jones (1979 DET) also hit home runs. Lew Krausse (1968 OAK) gave up seven runs on nine hits, all four home runs, in five innings. Herb Pennock (HOF) allowed one run in three innings for the win. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) got his 22nd save. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) allowed seven runs -- three earned -- on 12 hits in four innings. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) took the loss with one inning of relief. Allegheny at Pittsburgh
Tribe sink Bucs in ninth Allegheny plated three runs in the top of the ninth to rally and knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2. A two-out single by Gene Tenace (1979 SDN) off Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) gave Allegheny the lead. Tom Daly (1901 BRO) doubled off Lew Moren (1909 PHN) to make the score 5-2. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) got his 11th save. The win went to Gary Ross (1969 SDN) who pitched two innings and allowed two hits. Tim Conroy (1983 OAK) did a good job, giving up two runs on eight hits and four walks in six innings. McDowell (11-5) had a shutout until the seventh and then took the loss. He was charged with all five runs on six hits, four walks and nine strikeouts. The Pirates left 12 men on base and the Indians only had seven hits. Laurel at Elk County
Elk County drops Highlanders 3-1 Elk County broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eight and edged the Highlanders 3-1. Herbie Moran (1914 CIN), Art Howe (1978 HOU) and Bill Friel (1901 MLA) each drove in a run for the Outdoorsmen. Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) earned his 10th win of the year, going eight innings and giving up one run on seven hits. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) got his 14th save, throwing a runner out at the plate in the top of the ninth. Bob Moose (1968 PIT) allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in seven innings and falls to 5-8 overall. Laurel left 10 men on base. LeHigh Valley at Appalachian
Error in 14th gives Miners 3-2 win An error by Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) cost LeHigh Valley a 3-2 decision in 14 innings to Appalachian. This one had some great pitching, some not so great defense through out. The Miners had just two hits the last 4 1/3 innings of the game but managed to win in the bottom of the 14th. Curly Ogden (1925 WAS) beaned John Hummel (1909 BRO) -- the fourth Miner to be hit with a pitch in the game. George Barclay (1902 SLN) singled to put runners on the corners, and Chick Fullis (1934 SLN) hit a grounder to third that was booted by Kurowski to win the game. After Paul Hartzell (1977 CAL) went nine innings and allowed one earned run on eight hits, Harry Dorish (1954 CHA) threw four innings of two-hit relief. Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) went one inning and got the win. Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) also threw nine innings, giving up two runs on seven hits which lowered his ERA to 6.59. Rich Delucia (1995 SLN) struck out five and gave up one hit in four innings. Ogden took the loss.

Elks win late 2-1 A two-run bottom of the eighth was enough to get Elk County past Delaware Valley 2-1. Ray Caldwell (1914 NYY) pitched a gem but opened the last of the eighth with two walks. Johnny Lush (1906 PHN) singled to tie the game 1-1. Red Murray (1910 NYG) hit a sacrifice fly to take the lead. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) gave up a pinch-hit double in the ninth to Reggie Jackson (HOF). He left him there for his 15th save. Rube Waddell (HOF) threw eight innings for the win, allowing one run on six hits and striking out eight. Caldwell (10-7) was charged with two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Lake Erie at Cumberland Valley
Amish put together 4-2 win The Amish Men were work-like in their business as they built a 4-2 win against visiting Lake Erie. Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) drilled his 16th home run of the year and catcher Johnny Bassler (1925 DET) doubled home the other run. Bill Sherdel (1928 SLN) got a much-needed win and is now 3-7 overall, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Sherdel has won back to back starts. Gene Garber put this one in the books for his 16th save. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) threw a nice game as well, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on six hits in six innings but fell to 8-10 on the year. Pittsburgh at Laurel
Pirates blast Highlanders 9-6 Pittsburgh scored all nine runs in the fourth inning and beat its nemesis in the West once again 9-6. Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) just could not get out of the fourth inning as the Bucs scored nine runs on nine hits. Steve Sundra (1943 SLA) came in and he couldn't get out of the frame either. Humphries (8-5) allowed eight runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Sundra went on to work the final 5 1/3 for the Highlanders. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) got to the ninth but couldn't finish the game. Purkey (6-2) gave up six runs on 12 hits but Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) wrapped it up for his 20th save. Bobby Wallace (HOF), Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) and Tom Satriano (1968 CAL) each had two RBI for the Pirates. Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE) went 3 for 5 with two home runs for the Highlanders. Lou Klimchock (1969 CLE) was 3 for 4 and Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) hit his fourth home run of the season. Pittsburgh now leads the West by 11 games. Appalachian at Philadelphia
Miners bury Phillies 13-6 Appalachian scored runs in the each of the first seven innings as they rolled to a 13-6 win at Philadelphia. Ron Northey (1944 PHN) hit two doubles, a home run and had four RBI for the Miners. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) drove in three runs and Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) hit his 22nd home run of the season. Fort McIntosh at LeHigh Valley
LeHigh "Hacked" 13-2 Hack Wilson (HOF) homered and drove in four runs in a 13-2 laugher for Fort McIntosh over LeHigh Valley. Four runs in the first and six in the fifth put the Militia in the driver's seat. Tom McCreery (1901 BRO) tripled and had three RBI. John Burkett (1993 SFN) pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on 11 hits and striking out nine. Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) was 3 for 5 for the Industrialists. Tommy Hughes (1941 PHN) gave up eight runs on seven hits with five walks in four innings. Charlie Wagner (1941 BOA) was charged with five runs, four hits and seven walks in five innings of relief. Allegheny at Turkey Island
Islanders grab 2-1 win in ninth It wasn't overly dramatic, but a sacrifice fly by Pat Kelly (1969 KCA) in the bottom of the ninth gave Turkey Island a 2-1 win over Allegheny. This one saw some good pitching and defense as both teams got out of jams to keep the game tied. The Susquehannocks knotted things 1-1 in the sixth after an intentional walk to Rip Collins (1934 SLN) loaded the bases and Rick Krivda (1995 BAL) then walked Mike Mowrey (1910 SLN) to force in the tying run. Steve Kline (1998 MON) got two outs in the top of the ninth and then received his first win. Elmer Knetzer (1914 PIT FL) went 8 1/3 innings for the Susquehannocks, allowing one unearned run on five hits. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) took the loss after 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) belted his third home run of the year, a three-run shot to give the Outdoorsmen the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Mussina (HER) went six innings for the win. Dick Barrett (1943 PHN) threw three perfect innings of relief for his first save. John Ward (HOF) went 3 for 4 with two triples for Elk County. The Pirates are off to a 5-1 start in July and hold a 12-game lead in the West over the Highlanders. Appalachian at Philadelphia
Miners pile on Phillies 8-6 Three players drove in two runs apiece and the Coal Miners put one over on the Phillies 8-6. The Miners have won four straight and the Phillies have lost four in a row. Appalachian is now 2 1/2 games behind East leading Delaware Valley. Fort McIntosh at LeHigh Valley
Fort topples LeHigh 9-1 A seven-run top of the ninth inning turned a 2-0 game into a blowout and Fort McIntosh beat LeHigh Valley 9-1. Joe Cascarella (1934 PHA) pitched into the ninth before tiring and the Industrialists down 2-0. His bullpen did nothing for him, allowing his two runs in plus five more. Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) allowed three runs and didn't get an out. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) gave up two more. Emmett Heidrick (1901 SLN) went 3 for 5 with two RBI. King Lear (1915 CIN) was given his first start of the year, his first appearance for that matter, and allowed one run on seven hits in six innings for the win. Mathewson (10-8) gave up six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits in six innings. Matty has lost two in a row and four of his last five starts. Elk County at Pittsburgh
Elks snip Bucs in 11 A two-out base hit in the top of the 11th by Ossee Schreckengost (1902 PHA) drove home Don Hoak (1957 CIN) and Elk County grabbed a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a great pitcher's dual between Pittsburgh's Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) and Elk County's Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY). Both teams elected to leave their starters in past the ninth inning. McDowell (11-6) went 10 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on just four hits while walking five and striking out 14. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) came in and gave up the hit to Schreckengost. LeHigh tags Erie in ninth A three-run top of the ninth broke a 1-1 tie and LeHigh Valley took a 4-1 win over Lake Erie. This one was a real good pitching confrontation. Simmons (9-7) threw eight, allowing one run on four hits and struck out six. Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) got his 18th save. The Industrialists had 14 hits and left 10 men on base. Militia barely survive 10-9 Philadelphia scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth but still came up short against Fort McIntosh 10-9. It was a ridiculous last of the ninth as the Militia sent four relievers to the mound to try and end the game. Exposition Park: 1891-1909 Home to the Allegheny County Indians This old ball park was on the city's north side, very near the current site of Three Rivers Stadium. The Home Plate location was in the Three Rivers Stadium parking lot mid-way between Gate B and C and the Clark Bar & Grill. It was on the river side of the General Robinson Street extension, and on the stadium side of the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Local SABR members surveyed the site and, at one time, marked the approximate home plate location with white paint (in the shape of a home plate). In fact, all the base locations are marked with white paint. Home plate was in a parking space, and many times, was covered with a parked car. The other bases were easily seen even when the lot was in use. In September 1998, a state-sponsored historical marker commemorating the first modern World Series was dedicated on the old ballpark site. The plaque was put into storage when Three Rivers Stadium was imploded in 2001. Stay tuned here for future developments. The site was actually the home to three versions of Exposition Park: the lower field (1882), the upper field (1883), and Exposition Park III (1890). In 1875, the first Allegheny Exposition was held in a hall on the flats along the north shore of the Allegheny River. The Exposition's goals were to promote Pittsburgh, display local products, and to provide some entertainment. In addition to the hall, there was some open space where horse races, circuses, and concerts were held. The American Association Alleghenies played baseball games here, in these open fields, starting in 1882. The Upper Field was hastily created when the lower field (closer to the river) flooded in 1883. Tired of the ballfields on the flood plain, the Alleghenies moved to higher ground at Recreation Park in 1884 (see above). The exhibit halls on this Exposition Park site burned down in 1883 and were later rebuilt across the river on the Point. With the North Side site now largely unoccupied, the new Players League built Exposition Park III very near the current site of Three Rivers Stadium in 1890. The Player's League folded after just one season, and the National League Pirates moved into Expo III in 1891. Most notable events: Exposition Park was the National League host for the first World Series in 1903. The Allegheny River flooded on the 4th of July 1902; more than a foot of water covered large parts of the outfield. It was the perfect time for a double header as the Bucs took on Brooklyn. A special ground rule was created: all outfield hits into the water were singles. The Buccos swept the double header. Capacity: 16,000 Dimensions: Left Field: 400 feet Center Field: 450 feet Right Field: 400 feet Exposition Park was noted for its twin spires behind homeplate on the roof of the grandstand. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad came to own the site. It was used briefly by the Federal League in 1914-1915, but thereafter, it was abandoned and gradually disappeared. By the mid-'20s, the railyard had grown to cover pretty much all of what had been the ballpark. A special thanks to Denis Repp (splinter@usaor.net) for his contribution to the sections on Exposition Park and Recreation Park. Denis sent me a follow-up note of interest. At the end of the inaugural 1883 season at Expo II, the American Association Allegheny ball club and the landlord of the exhibition grounds, the Exhibition Society, squabbled over $250 in rent, countered by a $3,000 threatened lawsuit for fence/grounds repairs as well as extra police security to protect two openings the Exhibition Society left in the Grounds (fencing I assume). On opening day, the Exhibition Society (allegedly) took control of the entrance gates from the ball club, and doubled the normal 25 cent admission and turned away those who showed up with just a quarter. The ball club and the landlord also bickered over control of various gates, with the landlord eventually declaring the lease "null and void" and claiming the club "couldn't lease the ground for any amount of money." The squabble was overcome by events when the Exposition Grounds buildings were destroyed by fire in the off season. The Alleghenys were offered a new park near the modern-day Strip District, but club ended up at Recreation Park for the 1884 season. (Source: Pittsburgh Post, 1883) July 10, 2012

Mamaux masterful, Fort wins 4-1 Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) continues to dominate the Keystone State League as he led Fort McIntosh to a 4-1 win over Elk County. Mamaux (15-4) said his feelings weren't hurt when the Pirates traded him for Dick Allen. "I'm just going to keep pitching like I've been and try to help this team win." Mamaux went from first place to last place but has helped the Militia climb out of the basement in the West. Since joining the Militia, Mamaux is 5-1 in six starts with five complete games, two shutouts and an ERA of 1.58. Mamaux now leads the Keystone State League with a 1.96 ERA and is second behind Pittsburgh's Bill Doak and his 16 wins. He is also tied for the league lead with eight complete games Catcher Tony Rensa (1930 PHN) hit a three-run homer, going deep for the second day in a row. Mamaux lost his shutout in the bottom of the ninth after back to back doubles by Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) and Art Howe (1978 HOU). Rube Bressler (1914 PHA) fell to 4-5 overall after allowing four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Delaware Valley at LeHigh Valley

Moyer (6-7) worked eight innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out six. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) got his 23rd save. Joe Cascarella (1934 PHA) had another good outing but came up short after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. After both teams scored a run in the first inning, a sacrifice fly by Mike Piazza (HER) ended up being the difference for the Minutemen. Allegheny at Pittsburgh
Indians outmatch Pirates Jeff Musselman (1988 TOR) won his first game as an Indian as he dominated the Pirates and took Allegheny to an 8-2 win. Musselman (1-2) took a shutout in into the eighth inning. He gave up two runs on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. The Tribe had 14 hits in the night with four doubles and three triples. I decided that today's games I was just going to post the box score so you could see who was in the lineup and some stats so far. Game 1 was a NO-HITTER!!! Harry Coveleski beaned Harry Lumley in the first and his only walk came in the eighth I believe. He has won six consecutive starts for the Coal Miners. This was his sixth complete game and first shutout. You can see the box score at the bottom of this page at the strat fan forum. www.stratfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89045&page=25&p=1251907#post1251907
