LeHigh comes to life, beats Susquehannocks 8-6 [/FONT][/center] A six-run bottom of the eighth inning gave the Industrialists an 8-6 win over Turkey Island. The Susquehannocks had a 6-2 lead when they took Chrisy Mathewson (HOF) out of the game. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) came in and got into trouble in the eighth. Stan Belinda (1993 PIT) couldn't stop the Industrialists as they scored four runs off Steele and two off Belinda. In the bottom of the eighth, Al Spangler (1964 HOU) and Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) hit back to back triples. Joe Boley (1930 PHA), Eddie Stanky (1949 BON) and Dom Dallessandro (1941 CUB) all singled to take the lead. Coveleski (4-0) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings for the win. Mark Gubicza (1988 KCA) was knocked around for five runs on six hits in one inning of work for the Phils. Amish beat Minutemen in 10 [/FONT][/center] Greg Gross (1984 PHN) came through with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th to push the Amish Men past the Minutemen 7-6. Gross batted once in the game after entering for the injured Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO). Bruce Sutter (HER) blew his second save by giving up three runs on five hits in the eighth inning to tie the game 6-6. Jim Todd (1975 OAK) took the win with one inning of relief. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) was the loser, working just 2/3 of an inning. Sid Bream (1986 PIT) had three hits and two RBI for Cumberland Valley. Matt Clement (2002 CUB) pitched six innings for the win, giving up just two hits with six strikeouts, but he also walked six and allowed two runs. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) pitched two innings for his first save. Rube Waddell (HOF) falls to 2-3 after going six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. Elk County left 11 men on base. Fort falls to Smith [/FONT][/center] Frank Smith (1909 CHA) easily put away the Militia with a three-hit shutout the Pirates won 4-0. Smith (2-3) lowered his ERA to 0.85, following up his last start where he gave up one run in the 10th inning and lost 1-0. Smith walked two and struck out nine against the Militia. Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) hit his league-leading seventh home run of the season for the Bucs. Paul Minner (1952 CUB) went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and drops to 0-4 on the year. Collins carries Lake Erie past Highlanders [/FONT][/center] Joe Collins (1952 NYY) went 3 for 3 with three RBI to lead the Mudpuppies to a 6-3 win over the Highlanders. Lake Erie outhit the Highlanders 13-8, and also left 10 men on base. Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) went 4 for 5 for the Mudpuppies. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) went eight innings for the win, allowing three runs on eight hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Harry Weaver (1918 CUB) came on for his second save of the year. Stan Musial (HOF), Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) went a combined 1 for 10. Mowrey and Taylor each hit two-run shots off Randy Gumpert (1949 CHA). Mowrey hit seven home runs in his 13-year career. Pete Vuckovich (1978 SLN) went 6 1/3 innings for the win. He walked the first two hitters, then Butch Wynegar (1977 MNA) singled and Russ Wrightstone (1927 PHN) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Herr then doubled to the gap to win the game. Sauer is sweet in 10-1 win [/FONT][/center] Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) belted two home runs and drovein five and the Pittsburgh Pirates blasted the Fort McIntosh Militia 10-1. Sauer is the first to reach 10 home runs on the season. Sauer is on an eight-game hitting streak, raising his average from .222 to .329 and hitting seven home runs over that span. Sauer also moved ahead of Stan Musial (HOF) for the league lead with 24 RBI. Bobby Wallace (HOF) went 3 for 5 with two RBI for the Bucs. It was Bill Doak (1914 SLN) taking care of the pitching dutites, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Doak is 5-0 to start the year. Bailor's first shot of the season was one of three on the night for the Highlanders, with Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) and Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) each hitting their seventh roundtripper of the season. It was a back and forth slugfest with 12 total runs scored in the first four innings. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) lasted six innings to improve to 4-0, giving up five runs on eight hits. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) notched his seventh save and is yet to give up a run this year. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) gave up seven runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in four innings for the loss. Two errors on second baseman Claude Ritchey (1903 PIT) resulted in three unearned runs for the Highlanders. Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) pitched seven innings to stand at 4-1 on the year, allowing two runs on six hits. Rich Delucia (1995 SLN) finished it off for his eighth save of the season. The closer has not allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings of work, and has only given up two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) threw the ninth for his eighth save of the season, with Bobby Locke (1960) getting his fourth hold in the eighth inning. HONUS WAGNER Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates is off to a furious start this season in the Keystone State League, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a share of first place in the Western Division. Wagner has shifted to right field instead of his usual shortstop position to allow for Bobby Wallace to get in the lineup. Wagner is the table setter for the Bucs, leading off the batting order and topping the Keystone League with a .432 average. Wagner is also first in runs scored (26), total hits (38), stolen bases (23), on base percentage (.485), runs created per 27 outs (14.5), total average (1.564) and average vs. lefties (.560). BILL DOAK Bill Doak is the No. 3 starter in the Pirates rotation, but has rolled through the first month of the season, contributing to the best pitching staff in the league. "Spittin' Bill" or "Lumbago Bill" as he has been called, went a perfect 6-0 in six starts this year. His 1.18 ERA is third in the league and he is fifth in innings pitched. Doak worked one shutout and has allowed six earned runs in 45 2/3 innings. Right-handers are hitting .181 against him. Frank Grube (1934 SLA) plated two runs with clutch single off Stan Coveleski (HOF). Ramon Martinez (2002 SFN) entered in the seventh and hit his first home run in the seventh. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) went 4 for 6 and Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) was 3 for 6 with three RBI for Laurel. Clyde Barnhart (1925 PIT) was 4 for 5 with two doubles for the Susquehannocks. Simmons tops Owens, LeHigh wins 2-1 [/FONT][/center] Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) and Jim Owens (1959 PHN) went toe to toe in a great pitcher's dual. Simmons (5-1) got the better of Owens (1-5) and the Industrialists took a 2-1 decision over the Mudpuppies. Simmons fanned six and gave up five hits in the complete game win. Owens took the complete game loss, allowing one earned run on five hits. Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) tripled a run home in the first, and an error on Sherry Magee (1910 PHN) let the second run in. "Tiger" attack mauls Miners [/FONT][/center] "Tiger" Don Hoak (1957 CIN) hit a grand slam to cap an eight-run eighth inning and Elk County climbed over the Miners for an 11-9 win. Paul Foytack (1957 DET) left the game for Appalachian after five innings with a 6-3 lead. The Miners led 8-3 when Elk County battled back. Gary Lavelle (1983 SFN) took over for Harry Dorish (1954 CHA) and couldn't slow down the Outdoorsmen. An error kept thing going and Hoak smashed a grand slam to take the lead. Sparky Lyle (HER) picked up the win and Doug Brocail (1998 DET) his seventh save. Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) had two doubles and four RBI for the Miners. Hoak finished with five RBI. Parrish delivers win for Allegheny [/FONT][/center] Lance Parrish (HER) plated the game-winning runs with a single in the fourth and Allegheny topped Philadelphia 7-3. Cliff Markle (1915 NYY) made his first start and lasted long enough for the win. He gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) threw four two-hit innings of relief with three walks and five strikeouts for his second save. Walt Masterson (1953 WAS) took the loss for the Phillies. Masterson (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits with six walks and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) homered in the ninth for the Indians. Roy Campanella (HOF) went deep for the Phillies.

Bucs give up lead, lose 8-7 in 20 [/FONT][/center] An incredible 20-inning marathon saw Turkey Island rally to tie the game in the ninth, and then finally take an 8-7 victory over the Pirates. Turkey Island scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game 6-6. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) couldn't get the save in relief of Jim Shaw (1918 WAS), and left Bill Doak (1914 SLN) with a no-decision. From there it was great relief pitching from both teams. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. Then Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) completely shut down the Pirates, going 5 1/3 innings and not allowing a hit or a walk. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) came on in the last of the 20th, gave up one run, but got his second save. For Pittsburgh, after Miljus gave up the lead, threw seven innings with no runs and three hits allowed. Lew Moren (1909 PHN) took the loss, going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Honus Wagner (HOF) had the day off, but pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth and ended up going 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. Wagner did throw Moose McCormick (1909 NYG) out at home plate in the 16th. Turkey Island threatened in the 17th and 18th but failed to score. Top 20, a one out walk was followed by a Craig Grebeck (1993 CHA) double to score the go-ahead run. Mike Difelice (1998 TBA) singled to right for an 8-6 lead. Buddy Bell (HER) doubled in the bottom of the 20th with one out for Pittsburgh. Bobby Lowe (1901 BON) singled and Paul Schaal (1971 KCA) hit a sacrifice fly. Wagner was the last hope for the Bucs and he grounded out to end the game.
