Highlanders storm to 21-11 massacre of Indians [/FONT][/center] A crazy night of awesome hitting coupled with bad pitching and worse defense saw the Highlanders annihilate the Indians 21-11. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) turned in a 5 for 6 night with a triple, two home runs and six RBI. Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE) both had five hits while Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) hit two home runs and had four RBI. Stan Musial (HOF) had two RBI to now lead the league with 14, and has also hit safely in all eight games this year. Bill Phillips (1902 CIN) got out of the game after five innings, but he had a 14-5 lead at that point. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits to get the win. Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits in four innings of relief and was credited with a save. Jason Conti (2002 TBA) went 3 for 5 with a home run and five RBI in the loss for the Indians. Tim Conroy (1983 OAK) made his first start and was smashed for six runs on five hits in one inning of work. Dave Freisleben (1977 SDN) then allowed eight runs on 10 hits, three homers, in three innings of relief. Gary Ross (1969 SDN) went 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Allegheny shortstop Dick Groat (1960 PIT) was beaned and left the game in the third inning. Laurel is on a three-game winning streak.

Bell tolls for Militia [/FONT][/center] Buddy Bell (HER) went 4 for 5 with three RBI and the Pittsburgh Pirates hit their way to a 12-6 win over Fort McIntosh. Mark Solters (1934 BOA) also went 4 for 5 for the Bucs. Pittsburgh outhit the Militia 17-9. Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) picked up his first win with six innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) went the last three innings for the save. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) allowed eight runs -- five earned -- on 13 hits in six innings to take the loss. Tito Francona (1959 CLE) had three RBI. Hack Wilson (HOF) hit a two-run homer, and Francona went deep to tie the game 5-5 in the sixth. Matt Karchner (1995 CHA) put runners on the corners with two out in the bottom of the ninth but held on for his second save. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. He allowed solo home runs to Wilson and Mickey Haslin (1934 PHN). Getz pinch ran and stayed in the lineup as designated hitter in his first game of the season. Honus Wagner (HOF) led off the ninth with a double and Bobby Wallace (HOF) singled him home to tie the game. Getz then tripled to win the game. Russ Kemmerer (1960 CHA) got the win in his first game of the year, going 1 2/3 innings in relief of Sam McDowell (1968 CLE). Matt Karchner (1995 CHA) blew the save in the ninth and took the loss. Dykes breaks down Fort, Phils win 10-9 [/FONT][/center] A crazy back and forth slugfest that saw five lead changes avoided extra innings when Amos Strunk (1916 PHA) and Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) hit back to back doubles in the top of the ninth and the Phillies got by the Militia 10-9. This was going to be a long one after Philadelphia scored five runs in the first and Fort McIntosh answered with four runs in its first at-bat. Dykes' game-winning hit was his only one of the game, while Strunk extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) went 4 for 5 with three RBI for the Phillies. Harry Davis (1906 PHA) had three hits with two doubles. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) lasted five innings for Philadelphia, allowing eight runs on 13 hits. After Joe Harris (1925 WAS) made the throw home from first base for an out, Nellie Fox (HOF) singled the go-ahead run home, and an error allowed another run to score. Whitey, Buck bash Highlanders [/FONT][/center] Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) and Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) each had six RBI as the Industrialists were relentless in pounding the Highlanders 19-7. Kurwoski hit two home runs and Freeman also went deep with four hits on the day. Doug Clemens (1964 CUB) finished 4 for 7 with three RBI. LeHigh Valley scored its 19 runs in just four different innings. They started by destroying Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) for nine runs on 10 hits in the top of the first. Only four of those first nine runs were earned. Steve Sundra (1943 SLA) gave up seven runs on eight hits and six walks in seven innings of relief, and Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) allowed three runs on four hits the last 1 1/3 innings. Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) was the recipient of the offensive barrage of runs and hits, pitching six innings for the win, allowing four runs on seven hits. Laurel's six-game winning streak came to an end.

Bell batters Tribe, Amish win 13-5 [/FONT][/center] Les Bell (1926 SLN) homered and drove in three runs to lead the Amish Men to a 13-5 beating of the Allegheny Indians. Cumberland Valley knocked out 17 hits for the game. Max Bishop (1928 PHA) went 4 for 6 with two RBI and Cliff Heathcote (1926 CUB) went 3 for 4. Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) hit his third home run of the season. George Winter (1906 BOA) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing five runs -- two earned -- on seven hits. Gene Garber (1978 ATN) threw three shutout innings of relief for his third save. Joe Beggs (1943 CIN) was hammered for six runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Mamaux masters Minutement, Bucs win 4-1 [/FONT][/center] Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) fanned nine en route to a 4-1 Pittsburgh win over Delaware Valley. Mamaux (2-0) gave up one run on six hits and Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) picked up his fourth save of the year. Hank Sauer belted his sixth home run of the season and Bobby Wallace (HOF) drove in the other two runs. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 3 for 4 with three stolen bases. Bobby Shantz (1952 PHA) took his first loss, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) had three of the six hits for the Minutemen. Leonard leads Phils to 7-2 win [/FONT][/center] Jeff Leonard (1984 SFN) went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, and three RBI to help the Phillies to a 7-2 win at Fort McIntosh. Bill Dietrich (1943 CHA) earned his first win with 7 1/3 innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits. Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) went 3 for 5 for Philadelphia and Harry Davis (1906 PHA) added two RBI. Gus Dorner (1906 BON) left in the fourth inning and was charged with seven runs on nine hits. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) worked six innings scoreless relief, allowing two hits and one walk. Baldy Louden ((1914 BUF FL) had three of the eight hits for the Militia. Joe Lonnett (1957 PHN) was activated as the only catcher for the Militia after injuries to Ed Ott (1979 PIT) and Tony Rensa (1930 PHN). Coveleski traps Mudpuppies, Miners win 3-1 [/FONT][/center] Stan Coveleski (HOF) pitched a complete game and Adam Comorosky (1930 PIT) drove in two runs to give Appalachian a 3-1 win over Lake Erie. Coveleski (1-1) lowered his ERA from 7.00 to 4.00 by allowing one run on two hits in going the distance. Comorosky went 3 for 4 with a double and triple, and Jake Daubert also went 3 for 4. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) took the loss in allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings. Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) drove in the only run for the Mudpuppies with a double. Turkey Island at Elk County
Bressler blanks Susquehannocks [/FONT][/center] Rube Bressler (1914 PHA) threw a six-hit shutout to give Elk County a 4-0 win over Turkey Island. Bressler (2-0) struck out nine and walked three. His defense turned three double plays behind him. Five players had two hits for the Outdoorsmen. Jimmy Slagle (1902 CUB) had two RBI. Pat Malone (1928 CUB) took the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings. Moose McCormick (1909 NYG) had three hits and Danny Taylor (1934 BRO) had two for the Susquehannocks. Whitey, Buck bash Highlanders [/FONT][/center] Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) and Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) each had six RBI as the Industrialists were relentless in pounding the Highlanders 19-7. Kurwoski hit two home runs and Freeman also went deep with four hits on the day. Doug Clemens (1964 CUB) finished 4 for 7 with three RBI. LeHigh Valley scored its 19 runs in just four different innings. They started by destroying Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) for nine runs on 10 hits in the top of the first. Only four of those first nine runs were earned. Steve Sundra (1943 SLA) gave up seven runs on eight hits and six walks in seven innings of relief, and Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) allowed three runs on four hits the last 1 1/3 innings. Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) was the recipient of the offensive barrage of runs and hits, pitching six innings for the win, allowing four runs on seven hits. Laurel's six-game winning streak came to an end.

Moyer (1-2) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) finished it up for his third save. Reggie Jackson (HOF) hit a two-run homer, Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) had two RBI, and Mike Piazza (HER) went 3 for 4 for the Minutemen. Matty beats Amish 1-0 [/FONT][/center] Christy Mathewson (HOF) moved to 4-0 by hurling a five-hit shutout and Turkey Island beat Cumberland Valley 1-0. Mathewson (4-0) walked none and struck out three. The only run of the game scored on a ground out by Bob Ramazzotti (1952 CUB). Northey clubs LeHigh, Miners win 9-2 [/FONT][/center] Ron Northey (1944 PHN) went 4 for 5 with a double, home run and four RBI and the Miners shutdown the Industrialists 9-2. Harry Coveleski (1916 DET) pitched a complete game to move to 3-0, allowing two runs on seven hits. The Miners pulled away with seven runs the last three innings. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) continues to tear through the league, going 3 for 5 with three RBI. Adam Comorosky (1930 PIT) hit a solo home run to give Appalachian a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Peters handles Elk County [/FONT][/center] Gary Peters (1964 CHA) pitched a complete game and put away the Outdoorsmen 4-1. Peters (1-2) gave up one unearned run on four hits and struck out six. Doc Marshall went (1906 SLN) 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI for the Outdoorsmen. Claude Ritchey (1903 PIT) went 2 for 5 with two RBI but is only hitting .140 for the season. Rube Waddell (HOF) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. Terry Turner (1906 CLE) and Jimmy Slagle (1902 CUB) were both injured for Lake Erie and Elk County respectively. The four-game winning streak for the Outdoorsmen came to an end. Phillips deals, Griffeys homer against Militia [/FONT][/center] Bill Phillips (1902 CIN) went the distance and both Griffeys went deep and the Laurel Highlanders beat Fort McIntosh 8-3. Phillips (2-0) gave up one earned run on nine hits with eight strikeouts. Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) both hit home runs and catcher Joe Sugden (1903 SLA) went 3 for 4. Paul Minner (1952 CUB) gave up four runs on nine hits in five innings to take the loss for the Militia. Pete Suder (1949 PHA) went 3 for 4 with two RBI. The Militia have lost four straight games. Robinson homers, Tribe win 1-0 in 10 [/FONT][/center] An awesome pitcher's dual saw the game go to the 10th inning tied 0-0, but Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) blasted a home run off Frank Smith (1909 CHA) to give the Indians a dramatic 1-0 win. Matt Clement (2002 CUB) pitched nine shutout innings, striking out 10, but received a no-decision. He gave up nine hits, but the Pirates left nine men on base and two double plays helped out Clement. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) pitched an inning for the win. Smith (1-3) looked great once again, giving up five hits and one walk in nine innings. His ERA now stands at 1.08 and he is receiving just 2.75 runs per start. Robinson led off the last of the 10th and beleted his third home run of the year to snap a six-game losing streak for the Indians. Allegheny defeated Pittsburgh 1-0 in the second game of the season April 8 when Harry Gumbert (1943 SLN) topped Sam McDowell (1968 CLE).

Masterson (1-1) allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings and struck out nine. Del Ennis (1949 PHN) finally woke up at the plate for Philadelphia, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run. Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) had two RBI. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) held the Phillies to two runs in five innings despite giving up seven hits. He was helped out in the bottom of the first when Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) hit into a Triple Play with runners at second and third. Amish sneak past Susquehannocks 4-3 [/FONT][/center] A close game was decided by the defense when an outfield error allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth for Cumberland Valley. Max Bishop (1928 PHA) led off with a walk against Joe Klink (1990 OAK). Nellie Fox (HOF) put down his third sacrifice bunt of the game. With two out, Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit a shot to leftfield that Harry Lumley (1906 BRO) couldn't handel in leftfield and the winning run scored. Randy Gumpert (1949 CHA) pitched eight innings for the win, allowing three runs on eight hits. Rich Delucia (1995 SLN) notched his fifth save of the season. Shawkey (2-1) gave up a one-out single to Sherry Magee (1910 PHN) in the top of the sixth inning and a solo home run to Joe Collins (1952 NYY) with two out in the ninth. Shawkey walked two and struck out four. John Ward (HOF) singled a run home in the bottom of the first for the Outdoorsmen. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) gave up his second hit in the sixth when Ward doubled, and then Red Murray (1910 NYG) doubled him home. Laurel pounded out 19 hits with both Griffeys taking the day off. Musial leads the league with 22 RBI. John Burkett (1993 SFN) gave up five runs on 13 hits in six innings to take the loss. Amish melt down, Susquehannocks rally, win 12-11 [/FONT][/center] An incredible meltdown by the Amish Men and spectacular comeback win by the Susquehannocks. Trailing 11-4, Turkey Island scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to win 12-11. Cumberland Valley built a huge 10-0 lead after three innings. Mike Mowrey (1910 SLN) had two doubles and four RBI for the Susquehannocks. Bruce Sutter (HER) was brought in to stop the come back but he was woefully inadequate. With the bases loaded, he let all three runs in and then gave up three more of his own and is now 0-3 on the year. Joe Shaute (1928 CLE) relieved Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) after the starter gave up seven runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in two innings. Shaute (1-0) pitched five innings for the win, allowing four runs on nine hits. Stan Belinda retired the side in the ninth for his fourth save. Ken Raffensberger (1951 CIN) went six innings and thought he had a win but the bullpen gave it away. Vic Wertz (1950 DET) had a monster 4 for 8 game with a grand slam and eight RBI but the Amish still lost the game.

Manto bomb beats Philly [/FONT][/center] Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) belted a two-run homer and Ray Caldwell (1914 NYY) pitched a complete game as the Minutemen beat Philadelphia 4-3. Manto drilled his second home run of the year in the top of the fourth to put the Minutemen up 4-3. There was no more scoring the rest of the way. Caldwell (2-2) went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) also finished what he started in taking the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits. Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) also homered off Walters (1-3). Amos Strunk (1916 PHA) extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Appalachian at LeHigh Valley
Miners shaft LeHigh 12-2 [/FONT][/center] An eight-run eighth inning turned a close game into a blow out and Appalachian decimated the Industrialists 12-2. Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) led off the eighth with a home run off Jeff Mutis (1993 CLE). The Miners went on to bat around and score eight runs, five earned off Mutis. Appalachian outhit LeHigh 18-11. Paul Hartzell (1977 CAL) gave up two runs on nine hits in six innings for the win. Joe Ostrowski (1950 NYY) threw three shutout innings of relief for the save. Mudpuppies steal 3-2 win [/FONT][/center] Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) singled to drive in the John Ward (HOF) and the Outdoorsmen beat the Mudpuppies 3-2 in 10 innings. Ward singled, stole second, and went to third on catcher Carl Sawatski (1961 SLN) second throwing error of the game. Jones then singled to right off Ron Kline (1968 PIT) to win the game. Jim Duffalo (1964 SFN) came on in the 10th with two on and no out and got out of the jam to receive the win for Elk County. Lake Erie outhit the Outdoorsmen 8-5, with Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) going 3 for 4. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) gave up one unearned run and two hits in seven innings for a no-decision. Wagner drives Pirates to 16-1 win [/FONT][/center] Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 6 with four RBI and the Pittsburgh Pirates blew away the Allegheny Indians 16-1. Pittsburgh scored in six different innings and finished with 16 hits. Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) and Spike Shannon (1906 NYG) each had three RBI, with Shannon also going 4 for 6. Bill Doak (1914 SLN) is now 4-0 on the year, allowing one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Pirates pummeled three different pitchers for the Indians.

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the first but Delaware Valley chipped away. Jackson homered in the fourth and hit three-run blast in the fifth gave them a 5-2 lead. Good gives Elks come back win [/FONT][/center] Wilbur Good (1914 CUB) completed the comeback win for Elk County with a bottom of the ninth two-run single to give the Outdoorsmen a 5-4 victory over the Mudpuppies. Lake Erie scored three runs in the eighth off Sparky Lyle (HER) to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Outdoorsmen scored three off Ron Kline (1968 PIT). Kline blew the save in the ninth, and took a second straight loss, when Good plated two runs with a base hit to right to win the game and finish with three RBI. Jim Duffalo (1964 SFN) picked up the win for the second day in a row with one inning of relief. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) took a no-decision instead of a win, being charged with three runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings. Elk County has won three straight while Lake Erie has lost three in a row. Mamaux (3-0) walked three and struck out five in going the distance for the shutout. Glenn Beckert drove in two runs with a single in the eighth. Harry Gumbert (1943 SLN) gave up one run on four hits in seven innings and took the loss. Pittsburgh has won three in a row while Allegheny has lost nine of the last 10 games.
