Bucs give up lead,
lose 8-7 in 20 [/FONT][/center] An incredible 20-inning marathon saw Turkey Island rally to tie the game in the ninth, and then finally take an 8-7 victory over the Pirates. Turkey Island scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game 6-6. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) couldn't get the save in relief of Jim Shaw (1918 WAS), and left Bill Doak (1914 SLN) with a no-decision. From there it was great relief pitching from both teams. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. Then Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) completely shut down the Pirates, going 5 1/3 innings and not allowing a hit or a walk. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) came on in the last of the 20th, gave up one run, but got his second save. For Pittsburgh, after Miljus gave up the lead, threw seven innings with no runs and three hits allowed. Lew Moren (1909 PHN) took the loss, going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Honus Wagner (HOF) had the day off, but pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth and ended up going 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. Wagner did throw Moose McCormick (1909 NYG) out at home plate in the 16th. Turkey Island threatened in the 17th and 18th but failed to score. Top 20, a one out walk was followed by a Craig Grebeck (1993 CHA) to score the go-ahead run. Mike Difelice (1998 TBA) singled to right for an 8-6 lead. Buddy Bell (HER) doubled in the bottom of the 20th with one out for Pittsburgh. Bobby Lowe (1901 BON) singled and Paul Schaal (1971 KCA) hit a sacrifice fly. Wagner was the last hope for the Bucs and he grounded out to end the game. Fort McIntosh at Delaware Valley
Militia still needs reinforcements [/FONT][/center] Fort McIntosh played a close game at Delware Valley but was unable to end their losing streak. Mickey Vernon (1953 WAS) drove in the game-winning run with a single in the eighth and the Minutemen won 3-1. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) threw a fine game, going seven innings and allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) notched his eighth save. John Burkett (1993 SFN) took the tough loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Minutemen have won six in a row and nine of the last 10. Erie harried by Heffner [/FONT][/center] Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and went on to finish what he started in a 5-1 win for Delaware Valley. Heffner (2-1) only allowed four hits and two walks. Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) singled with two out in the seventh for the Mudpuppies to break up the no-hitter. Lake Erie avoided the shutout in the ninth with a triple by Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) and a sacrifice fly by Joe Collins (1952 NYY). Outdoorsmen roll over Miners 9-3 [/FONT][/center] Luke Boone (1915 NYY) went 4 for 5 to help Elk County take out the Coal Miners 9-3. Boone's day raised his average to .220. Red Murray (1910 NYG) was 3 for 5 with two doubles. Mike Mussina (HER) got the win, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Tribe rally to down Phils 8-3 [/FONT][/center] Jim Russell (1944 PIT) drove in three runs as Allegheny stormed back to beat the Phillies 8-3. The Tribe piled up seven runs the last three frames for the win. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) went 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief for the win. Jack Meyer (1959 PHN) took the loss, allowing seven runs, five hits, six walks in 3 2/3 innings. The Indians left 14 men on base and the Phils stranded 10. |

Dykes drives Phils to 10-6 win [/FONT][/center] Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) had two doubles and three RBI as the Phillies outlasted the Outdoorsmen for a 10-6 win. Dykes and Danny Murphy (1910 PHA) each had three hits, and Roy Campanella (HOF) hit sixth home run for Philadelphia. Brook Jacoby (1987 CLE) had five home runs and eight RBI after seven games. He has not hit a home run since with only five RBI since April 13. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) managed to get his second win of the year, allowing six runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in six innings of work. Minutemen never give up,

Buck Weaver (1918 CHA) had two hits and two RBI for the Minutemen, but also hit into a triple play and was injured for at least two weeks. Lew Krausse (1968 OAK) went six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits for the win. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) got his ninth save. Wade Miller (2002 HOU) gave up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings on four hits and four walks for the loss. Ken Raffensberger (1951 CIN) picked up the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Jim Todd (1975 OAK) set it up for Gene Garber (1978 ATN) to work the ninth for his fifth save. Mamaux adds to Militia losses [/FONT][/center] Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) and the Pirates rolled through the Militia lineup for a complete game, 9-1 win. Mamaux (5-1) went the distance, allowing one run on four hits. Dick Allen (HER) hit his fifth home run of the season to keep the Militia from being shutout. The Pirates scored seven runs in two innings against Don Schwall (1961 BOA). Honus Wagner (HOF) and Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) each had three hits for the Bucs. Fort McIntosh has now lost 10 straight games since an 8-6 win over the Pirates April 25. They have went down 18 out of the last 19 games. Surprisingly, the Militia have two wins over the Bucs and two over the Highlanders to account for all four victories this year. Those are two teams at the top of the Western division. Erie tops Matty late for 4-2 win [/FONT][/center] A three-run eighth against Christy Mathewson (HOF) allowed Lake Erie to pull out a 4-2 win over Turkey Island. An error scored the go-ahead run for the Mudpuppies. Mathewson (4-2) allowed three earned runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) hung in there and got the win, going eight innings and giving up one run on five hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) got his sixth save. |

Gumpert (4-2) struck out nine with two walks for the win. Carl Furillo (1953 BRO) drove in five runs, including a grand slam in the top of the eighth to blow the game open. Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) went deep to tie the game in the sixth for Delaware Valley. Pete Filson (1983 MNA) worked one inning for the win. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) handled the ninth for his 10th save. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) and Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) each homered for the Miners. Daubert and Bill Coughlin (1902 WAS) each had three hits. All nine starters for the Miners had at least one hit as they scored in eight different innings. Stan Musial (HOF) swatted two home runs and Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) also homered for the Highlanders.
