WP: J. Key (1-0) LP: T. John (0-1)
History almost made. Two out in the bottom of the ninth, Jimmy Key loses his no-hitter when Willard Brown doubled past centerfielder Kiki Cuyler.
The dreaded roll of 1 on the outfield X chart cost Key the no-hitter. Joe Cronin led off the ninth with a ballpark HR split, which is HR 1, flyout 2-20. Then Lou Gehrig was retired by Ryne Sandberg making a play off the X chart. Willard Brown then hit a shot past Cuyler in centerfield.
Key walked two, struck out three, and two runners reached on errors.
Tommy John gave up four runs in seven innings in the loss.
