Curt Schilling took the Falcons to victory on opening day with a complete game effort, allowing five hits, no walks and striking out 10.
Carl Hubbell was still in the game at the end, but a two-run homer by Andre Dawson extended the lead. Eddie Murray whacked a three-run shot in the first.
Charlie Gehringer added three hits for Reading. Johnny Mize belted a solo homer for Reading in the bottom of the ninth.

Mike Mussina and the Reading Knights bounced back to win game two and even the series at 1-1.
"The Moose" pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Alan Trammell hit a solo homer off him in the fourth, and Sammy Sosa launched a two-run shot in the seventh.
Orel Hershiser didn't have it in this one, giving up nine runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Hugh Duffy and Dewey Creacy each had three hits for the Knights. Sosa had three hits for the Falcons.

At Messiah, Ed Walsh took care of business and pitched Reading to a 7-2 win and a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.
Walsh allowed nine hits in nine innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Red Faber made it into the eighth inning but gave up seven runs on nine hits and two home runs.
Goose Goslin knocked a two-out, three-run homer off Faber in the first inning. Goslin finished with four RBI on the day.
I forgot the lineups from game one just so you can see the starters for each team. This is game three.

The Reading Knights piled up eight runs late to win the series finale 11-7.
John Smoltz pitched eight innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with five walks and eight strikeouts.
Leroy Matlock didn't get out of the seventh inning as the Knights scored three runs to tie the game 6-6. Dewey Creacy doubled in a run, and Honus Wagner singled the tying runs home off Jose Mendez.
Reading then scored five runs in the eighth. Creacy and Hugh Duffy each had two RBI in the frame.
Sammy Sosa hit two home runs in the losing cause. Creacy went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI.

A great season-opener that went 10 innings before Bowie topped LaPlata 5-4.
Pop Lloyd doubled with two out, after Pete Hill had been thrown out stealing second by Carlton Fisk. Roberto Alomar drove in Lloyd with a single off Dennis Eckersly. "The Eck" gave up the 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth when Sam Thompson tripled to score Stan Musial with two out.
Cy Young pitched nine for the win, allowing six hits and four runs. Juan Marichal got a no-decision, going eight and allowing three runs on 11 hits. Sparky Lyle picked up the save.
Sam Thompson went 4 for 5 with a double, triple and two RBI.

A nine-run fifth inning made this one a blowout as LaPlata evened the series with an 11-6 victory.
15 men batted in the fifth. There were nine hits and eight runs scored with two out.
Fred Lindstrom had three RBI for the Warriors while Ted Williams and Dale Murphy hit home runs.
Jim Bunning pitched 8 1/3 innings for the win, charged with six runs on 12 hits.
Max Manning gave up 10 runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Baysox. He had only allowed one hit the first three innings of the game, a solo home run to Ted Williams.

LaPlata pulled away late to win 9-5 and lead the series two games to one.
The Warriors chased Old Hoss Radbourn from the game in the top of the eighth with no outs. Dale Murphy capped the four-run frame with a two-run homer.
Ray Brown went the distance for the win, allowing five runs on 11 hits. Dan Brouthers had three hits and three RBI.
Ed Lopat goes to the mound in the series finale for LaPlata. Bowie counters with Billy Pierce.

An unexpected complete game effort by Ed Lopat took LaPlata to an 8-4 win and the Warriors take the series three games to one.
Lopat allowed seven hits with seven walks and three strikeouts. Billy Pierce went seven innings in the loss, giving up seven runs and 11 hits.
Harry Heilmann homered for the Warriors and John Beckwith hit a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth for the Baysox.

An awesome pitching performance by Three Finger Brown, as he allowed just one hit in a 4-1 win for the Jammers.
Brown gave up a single to center by Earle Combs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A sac fly by Joe Morgan scored the only run for the Revolution.
Jamestown scored three runs in the first. Ron Santo had a two-run single, and in the second Tony Gwynn drove in Sammy T. Hughes.
Kevin Brown was great after the first two frames. He retired 14 in a row after that, and only gave up two hits the last seven innings and struck out 10 for the game.

A great come from behind win by the Jammers to down the Revolution 8-7.
Rollie Fingers gave up four runs in the top of the ninth to blow the save for Dave Brown and take the loss. Sammy T. Hughes tripled the first run in, and scored on a single by Tony Gwynn. After a double by Rafael Palmeiro, Ron Santo plated two runs with a base hit to take an 8-7 lead.
Kent Tekulve then wrapped it up for the save in the bottom of the ninth. Verdell Mathis got the win with two innings in relief of Luis Tiant.
Palmeiro had three hits. Dave Winfield drove in four runs in the loss.
