Quite frankly,I'm surprised that no one has asked about the UEW banner or more specifically about the black guy with a fish head.That is this week's bit of UEW Trivia.

That character is Tyrone Brown aka "Troutboy"!In reality,it's JJ Walker with the head of a trout super imposed over his head!The idea for "Troutboy" came in the late 90s. I wanted a really off the wall character for The Virtual Wrestling Federation which Kelly and my friend Mark Burns ran.

The gimmick was that Tyrone never appeared in public without the fish head.Well unless he was eating which he did a lot.In fact in the early days all of "Troutboy's" interviews were done from various popular resturant chains,like Denny's or White Castle or the local MacDonald's.

Tyrone's funniest gimmick is that he always speaks in rhymes.Not exactly a rapper,I think of Tyrone as more of a poet or a wayward songwriter.

"Troutboy's" finishers are The Gaff and Fishook.That's where I got the "Troutboy" catch phrase,"Troutboy is OFF THE HOOK!"

Tyrone Brown represents "The Common Man".He eats at fast food establishments and wipes his mouth on his sleeve.He's not perfect,but he is someone "The Regular People" can get behind.Especially when he held The UEW Title on 8 different occasions!Like The Jeffersons,Tyrone Brown worked his way out of the ghetto and is moving on up!

Okay let's talk about wrestlers!Sometimes I forget that the wrestlers that I know aren't necessarily ones that anyone else is familiar with.In the 60s,70s and 80s there were Territories still.The only way you'd get to see guys that weren't from you particular Territory was to watch them on TV.We were lucky here we had NWA,AWA,IWA,Southern Pro,Florida Wrestling and WWWF shows.

I mostly watched our NWA Hawaii TV shows.But on Channel 13 they showed AWA!I got to see guys like Jerry Blackwell,Stan Hansen,Verne Gagne plus all the cool jobbers!Jake "The Milkman" Milliman,Tom "Rocky" Stone,Paul Diamond etc.I especially liked AWA because Billy White Wolf,Nick Bockwinkle,Ray Stevens and "The Missing Link" Pampero Firpo all wrestled there.They all campaigned in Hawaii a lot in the 60s and 70s.

There was also shows from Detroit!The Crusher,Dick the Bruiser,Johnny Barend,Magnificent Maurice and Mark Lewin all wrestled there.Lewin wrestled for Polynesian Pacific Wrestling in the 80s along with Kevin Sullivan,Bad News Allan, Lars Anderson and Jimmy Superfly Snuka!

I remember watching WWF in the 80s and seeing Don Murracco.I knew him from Social Studies in High School!The guy was good he was Intercontinental Champion at the time.Crush worked for a company that manufactured lamps
fashioned out of cork,the guitarist and drummer from my band worked with him.Ricky Steamboat used to have a resturant called Steamer's over in Haleiwa!I used to see Sammy Steamboat eating at Genki Sushi all the time.Former WWWF World Champion King Curtis Iaukea used to be a disc jockey on KCCN.

All the greats came through here at one time or another.I saw Bruno Samartino wrestle once he was good.Dory Funk Jr wrestled here in the Main Event of our "Grand Parade of Champions" each month!I saw Johnny Barend go move for move with Dory Funk Jr.The match ended when Funk cheated to get the win.Before Mr Fuji made it big,he was a prelim wrestler here.Harry "Masa" Fujiwara,he was Curtis Iaukea's "stooge" then.Fuj' the Stooge was something we came up with in the 60s!

I use Strong Machine a lot in my UEW Fed.I saw the real Strong Machine tear Mr Tanaka and Tor Kamaka apart!He teamed with Big Machine,not the WWF version this was way before those Machines.I was fasinated with their masks because it looked like you couldn't see,because there were no eye holes!To come into a promotion and destroy two of it's best brawlers was just amazing!

Anyway I could go on and on.Please post anything about wrestlers you remember.BTW Hahn Lee worst wrestler ever wrestled here.The only time he got good was when he wore a mask and called himself "The Avenger".He tagged with Pedro Morales then...

I wish I had some good stories about wrestlers, but I don't, sorry.

I do wish I had gotten autographs from all my favorite wrestlers, that would have been cool! Maybe I will have to do the E-bay thing and pick some up!

The Civic Auditorium was so small that all the seats were good seats.Cheap seats were $.50 back then.Good family outting.

The 60s and 70s were a good time in wrestling.Those guys were pioneers.It wasn't about making millions of dollars then.No one was greedy.The wrestlers made $50 - $100 for each match unless they were a recognised Champion.
Johnny Barend said most times The mat was as hard as the concrete floor.All the guys knew how to wrestle then even the prelim guys.You'd see wrestling exhibitions if you watched Studio matches.Most matches had a definate winner.

All the guys I had autographs from are dead now.Besides I lost their autographs years ago anyway.When was the last time you saw a wrestler signing autographs before a match?

I used to go to the matches at the Springfield Civic Center here in MA. My buddy and I went a number of times in 1989 - 1991.

From what I heard from the rest of the crowd before being admitted into the Civic Center, wrestlers would sign autographs somewhere before the crowd was let into the building.

I'm not sure about now, since I haven't gone to see wrestling since then, I wonder if that's changed now?

Anyway, I did get to see some of my faves in the arena wrestle, so that was cool. (Sid Vicious, Jimmy Snuka, Bret Hart, Ron Garvin, Lex Luger, etc)

Now they hold autograph signing events at Record Stores or Video outlets or Shopping Malls.

The last time I went to a house show,we got to see The Freebirds,Terry & Dory Funk and Stan Hansen.Very good independent show.

I have never attended a pro wrestling card. Recently we had Dick the Bruiser Jr v Bobo Brazil Jr in town, and I asked family members to see if anyone wanted to go because I didn't want to go alone. Well...no one wanted to go, so I just went to work. I have nice cameras and am itching to take wrestling pics.

About autographs, it is a hobby of mine. Stay away from eBay. Fakes galore. But I have autographed pics of Bret Hart, Ivory and a few more.
